I was wondering if anyone on the forum has passed the exam using Code Quick, and if so are the tests in the program very much like the actual tests given. If anyone knows I would really appreciate your help. 73 Bob |

I used code quick but it only helped up to a point, I could copy at 5wpm but that was it. I then tried HamU. Code Quick did give me enough to pass the 5wpm (the first time) but I think HamU would have been better for me to use. After using HamU just for a couple times a week I can copy around 12 wpm easy. Also my code test was just about the same that is with the C/Q program. Going for my General next month!! |

Thanks Bulldog I have been passing at 5wpm on the C/Q tests but really wanted to know if the tests in Code Quick where close to what I would see when I go take the code next week. 73 Bob |

KB thanks I'm still nervous about taking the test. I was told I should be passing the pratice tests by someone at 7 to 8 wpm before I try the real thing. I'm not close to that, but I do have the practice test down at both 5 and 6 wpm. The last time I tried 7 wpm, I didn't do very well so... Thanks again and we'll see what happens next Saturday 73 Bob

Bob I passed my 20wpm using Code Quick. I cannot recall that the tests were as 'close to the real thing' or not, but they must have been and they should be. That was the only study source I used. I tried others, but this is what I could relate to. I think really, that's the key. What makes you feel most comfortable and confident in your learning will differ from someone else. Good luck and 73-- |

Kirk 20wpm that's great you must be an extra then. I've passed the example exams at 7 wpm missing only 2 characters both of them where the number 4. So I know I need to work on the numbers before Saturday. I would sure like to have 100% at 7 wpm by Friday, and would like to know that the real test is close to the Code Quick or not. I've been using W5YI for drills, but Code quick for all the tests and practice QSO’s and such. Thanks for the response Bob

Well my real concern is that I'm getting used to the example tests, and when I get the real thing I'll choke. I passed an example test at 8 wpm last night. Then began to wonder how much I was relying on what I knew to expect. So I decided to start doing hidden random characters, starting at 6 wpm, and out of 100 characters I have been missing between 5 and 10 characters. At 7 wpm I've missed as many as 11 out of 100. One thing that hurts in the random letters are the pro signs, they take longer to write. Then if there are two pro signs in a row followed by something like a / or a couple of numbers, then I really have to rush to keep up even at 6 wpm. I assume the test will be mostly words, so if you make a mistake in a word you can hopefully realize it and correct it before you turn the test in, and there shouldn’t be nearly as many pro signs in the exam. But that's if it is like the C/Q practice tests. And takes me back to my original question about the practice tests being similar to the real exam.

Stop worrying, (the same thing I did) relax!! If you can't get a charactor, just leave a blank space and go back later to fill it in. You will have a little time after the test to make any corrections. Keep in mind you can also pass by getting 25 correct charactors in a row. You just have to keep telling yourself to relax! Also they should give a little practice run before the test starts, to give you a little warm-up. You will be surprised when the test starts how well you can actually copy code. Then when its all over and done with and you have your CSCE in hand, you will ask yourself "Why did I worry so much, it was not that bad" Good Luck to you!! |

Thanks Bulldog I fel the tsame way before talking both written exams (Tech and General). I was really nervous until the tests actually started. Then I was surprised to see how easy it was. I didn't skimp on study time, but was worried that the tests I had used for practice (both QRZ and the Gordon West book) might not be close enough for me to pass the Tech test. For the most part the general exam was what I had at QRZ. There was only one question that wasn't on the QRZ test site. I still have a few days and I'll keep working at it, and hopefully the gitters will be over by then. But I probably won't be able to really relax until I get passed the test. I was feeling pretty confident until I started doing the hidden random letters. Then the doubt started. Thanks again Bob

Yep I passed at 5:15 pm on the 18th, I was planning on taking the test on the 20th, but I noticed that they had an ARRL testing site near the airport where I was going to pick my wife up on the 18th. I called my wife and told her that they where giving the test a few hours after her arrival, and it was only a few miles from the airport so she told me to bring everything I would need to take the test, just in case she had enough energy to wait until the testing time after flying in from Florida. So we did some shopping and visited family and friends until 4:30, then went to the testing site. So I've made it to general, and can relax about the one neighbor with the stereo problems. By the way the test is much shorter than the Code Quick practice tests are. The questions are similar to the real exam, but there are a few differences. I wish they had used computers for the exam so the audio quality would have been better, and you could make adjustments to the CW tone. But it’s over and done with and there's no more stressing about it. Thanks for asking Lon and 73 Bob

Thank you very much Lon, It took awhile to settle down and let it sink in after the test. The VEC after looking at my test sheet for no more than 2 seconds told me to forget answering the 10 questions because I had passed. I know I'm very lucky to have had the house and time to myself for the last month while I was studying the code. Thanks again Bob |

Thanks Highlander. it was just like Bulldog said "Why did I worry so much, it was not that bad" It took a bit to get started, but once I got in rhythm with the program, it really wasn't that bad. Again if you haven't passed the Code yet, all I can say is that Code Quick does work. 73 BOb |

KB thanks I was being subtle with the dog did it remark. I hope you're coming along with the program, and will be on HF when you move down here. By the way I read one review where the guy said he passed the Extra with Code Quick nearly 20 years ago, and he still remembers the word associations, and in fact can’t get them out of his head. Thanks again KB. 73 Bob

Just to let you know I started to study the Code in earnest after I passed the General written on Oct. 16th. I spent a few days getting used to the rhythm of the program, but once I got used to the rhythm the program progressed pretty fast. I passed the exam in great shape on Nov. 18th on the first try. One month and two days after passing the General written. I might have been able to pass the test a little earlier if there was a testing site within 50 miles of my home. I think that even at 32 days to pass the Code proves that the Code Quick software is very impressive. Best of luck to anyone else who decides to give Code Quick a try.

Ok I have been using the Code quick for a few weeks. I feel confident enough to give the test another try. I was using the G4FON program but I didn't pass using it. I think I grew bored of it. The code quick is very nice because it makes it fun to learn. I am going to give the code portion another try this Satruday. I have already passed the General written. I hope this time I get the code. I have been solid at 45 characters and up to 95 characters last night. The code quick practice test was pretty accurate from the real test I took(failed it). when you are completed you have to answer 10 questions just like in the real test. Wish me luck.... AR... you think you go it?

Geekster we need another general around here so Very Best of Luck. I'm also glad found the program fun to pratice the code with. As I said somewhere else you have to get passed the few first days and then after you get the hang of the program it gets much easier. I never really used anything but Code Quick, but did play with G4FON since it was a free download, but it really didn't do the trick for me. I also played with W5YI and the only thing I found somewhat useful where the drills. I would say if you can pass the practice test at 6 or 7 words a minute you'll have no problem at all with the real exam. Again Bext of Luck 73 Bob |

My opinion is Code Quick stinks on CD or Tape I found the Computer version has better options and you can get up to 20wpm with the COMPUTER version IF and that is IF you use ALL the options available. A friend of mine downloaded it on his pc and wasnt getting far after 2 weeks. He said he knew all the alpha and numbers but couldnt get them in a QSO or practice test. He told me this on a Wednesday I stopped by his house showed him what he was NOT doing with the software and showed him how to use the entire thing. I watched him after that and told him to go Saturday and take the test and just "sacrifice" 10 bucks just to see how it sounded so when he felt ready he knew what to expect, I KNEW HE WOULD PASS THOUGH. He went Saturday and he passed. USE THE PROGRAM IN ITS ENTIRETY and life will be good. I am willing to help anyone as much as I can if you are willing. |

Update... Passed the test with code quick 2000. Missed 3 characters total. worked with the code quick 2000 for 14 days, almost solid copy. The CD version has written exam theory for the tests too. Highly recommend this program. I agree use the program to is full exetent. The voice overs are the key to learning it quick. |

Geekster I hope to catch you on the 10 or 12 meter nets tomorrow, again very impressed. I might have been able to have done it in 3 weeks, but 14 days is great. I used the downloadable version, bought before Copper sold the CD . But I would also recommed the CD version sold here at Copper since it has better audio and more features than the downloadable version and the CD is a little less money here than it is at the Code Quick site. Lets se if I can get my signiture right this time 73 Bob CEF#362 KG6POG

also recommend the CD version it has the question pool and a nice practice program. I am running a Kenwood TS 520S at the moment. I do not have 12 meter capability on it but do have the 10 meters. I will have to check out the 10 meter nets now!

Thought I'd let you all know that Code Quick DOES work. I just upgraded to General today. Was able to get to 10 WPM in 1 month. The key to code,... IMHO,... is being able to make the time to practice. I really liked the QSO's, Tests, and the game Escargo. I set up the tone and speed at 5 WPM and went from there. Really, you Technician class ops and CB's ops,... it's really not that hard. Best of luck! XLAXX |

I do hope that people read this thread,... I read it just before I took the exam as a confidence booster. Copper is not paying me to say this stuff,... but really,... it WAS that easy. It was kinda funny taking the test because it was off of audio cassette tapes at truly slow speeds. My mistakes were from the numbers because I thought they were letters at first because the tape was going so slow. You wouldn't believe how slow 5 WPM is once you can achieve say, 7-8 WPM Don't let it scare you. Start with the ESCARGO game and it gets fun after that. --... ...-- XLAXX |
