I am in the immediate market for a Base Amp. I want somethng that has the lowest TVI/RFI problems possible. I won't ever be running more than 500 watts tops (more like 2 or 3 hundred) but I want an amp that can loaf at thse wattages. I also want an amp that will not turn out to be a headache, especially considering the piddly power that I will demand from it. I heard from several people in the past that the KLV 1000 amps had quality issues. Was this ever corrected? If so, how durable are they now if driven correctly (ie. 2 watts swinging 8. I notice that a few websites offer every imaginable part for them. Do these things fry various components frequently? I definitely don't want to end up buying and shipping parts back and forth. Been there, done that. I'd appreciate your opinions and experiences. Preferably from those who do not have a vested interest in making sales. Thanks! |

Legand, Well we have never had a Quality Problem or even heard of one and our KLV-1000 has about 5000 hours on it. We run a 2 watt DK swinging 5 or 6 into it and has worked GREAT. The only problems I have heard or know of is from people not knowing how to use them or Overdriving them and not reading the Owners Manual for setting the Tune / Load and Drive properly. Just our personal experience.

Hi, I owned a KLV 1000 for a couple of months, and it did a good job! They are made better than your average CB "base-box" from the '70s and early 80s (Maco, Varmint, HyGain, etc.). AND, they look nicer sitting on your desk! I drove mine with about 2 watts AM and 12 watts SSB. The output was roughly 500 watts PEP on a coax dynamics meter. A Dosy would probably show you considerably more, but they tend to be overly "generous!" HOWEVER, this was on 10 meters, and I believe that this amplifier would put out more on 11 meters. I never tried it on CB, though... I never had any TVI problems while running it, and nothing ever tore up in the couple of months I owned it. Why did I get rid of it? A CBer traded me a Heathkit SB 220 for it because he needed a "lower-drive" amplifier. He was still "blowing smoke" on it as of last night... I don't think you could go wrong for the money, and I have no vested interested in your purchase, whatever.... :-) |

Yep, I thought it was a good trade, too! Besides, I can operate the Heathkit on 75 meters... Those KLV amps are nice, though! |

Thanks for the responses guys. I will probably go ahead and order one, unless anyone on the forum here can tell me why this marriage should not take place. Any other KLV-1000 owners here? |
