Well Copper Forum Members the  NOVEMBER 1st 2004 MODEL of the MAGNUM 257 Arrived today. 
I will be Starting the REVIEW for the Copper Forum Members on it Tomorrow. 
Oh it also has the CP1 SPEECH COMPRESSOR in it now and REAL PRETTY BLUE LED CHANNEL DISPLAY and LED LIGHTS. 
I will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Bruce,
All I did was open box and hook power to it to take the picture (No Antenna Connected) and it had the same Power T-Plug as my FT-2800.
As I mentioned I have done nothing to it so far and honestly I did not even notice what frequency it was on when I took the picture. 
As time allows today I will get to it and get started on the Review.

I would like to know if the split function will work on 11 meters in addition to 10 meters. Some versions of this CPU (Like the one I have) won't do splits when in export mode. Just curious, it wouldn't be a deal breaker, but maybe Lon could test for that when he does the review?

Man, that thing is nice looking. It reminds me a lot of my 2 meter 1990 model Icom. It really is compact. I, too, am wondering if the price will be kept down like the other older model.

Yes the CP1 Speech Compressor and the MD1 Modulator, can be installed the older 257's as well as in Other radios.
I just got off the phone with the Forummaster and Sam Lewis, and the Forummaster is wanting to stock these 2 Items for the Copper Forum Members.

Lon, can this radio still go all the way up to the repeater frequencies on 10 meters and do the repeater splits once is modified for 11 meters? Some radios lose service in 10 meters once they are expanded, i.e., Galaxy 2517.

Lon can't wait to read the review on this radio. SInce I run SSB 99% of the time this looks like the radio for me. Don't want or need all echo and all the other toys that you usually pay for to get a good operating SSB radio. This looks like one I must have, so I had better talk to the better half and convince her it's a must have so I don't wind up sleeping with the dog or the horses.;-))))

Getting ready to order one, albeit I already have a spanking new DX2547, I can see this hobby getting expensive, may have to purge some gear!
I was wondering the current requirements of the Magnum 257. I will use it at home first then move it to the vehicle once familiar. I may buy another for the house. I need to build a supply for it, May just use a deep cycle battery and a smart charger! What are your views? |

What's the difference in the CP1 Compressor and the MD1 Modulator to the SP1 speech processor? Or is the combo of the 2 the SP1 processor? I'm a little confused, but then again alot of people would say that's normal for me. :-) And if and when they become available how easy would they be to install in the radio for the average person with instructions??

The MD-1 is a MODULATOR with SMT parts and on a board about 1/2" x 3/4" that is a dipped circuit board that mounts inside the radio.
The CP-1 is a SPEECH COMPRESSOR that also Mounts inside the Radio and is inside a RF Protected can.
As for the percise difference I cannot say as I have never used or heard or had any experience with the MD-1 MODULATOR before.

WOW, Got the 257 TODAY, very fast shipping, ordered yesterday!
I love it, I have pics of guts and doing mods. I don't know if I'm allowed to post them, but would be more than happy to with a first review.
Audio reports have been outstanding using a Horz Dipole 30' up on a hillside (Illinois hillside bummer!) Took it into town in the truck and truckers loved it. Quoted as very clean and punchy, may have sold more!
Gonna give it a week before considering selling the Galixy and grabbing another for redundancy. I still think the Galixy has a great receive, but the features and transmit quality of the 257 really shine.

We should be able to talk at low power! I am in Muncie which is between Fithian and Oakwood. I live on the bank of that stream behnd the Garst Seed factory. I plan to put up a better antenna before the ground freezes, Hopefully and Imax 2K.
I JUST got into CB so unless you frequnted the live music clubs or music stores we probably haven't takled. If I get the chance, maybe I'll catch you on the NET. I have to pick up the boy from grandma and grandpa tomorrow but I'll try to get back in time! Other than that I'll listen for you! Your home CH is hidden so I don't know where to catch you, if you want you can shoot me an E-mail to keep it private.

Got my new 257 Wednesday, very nice radio! Running on a 10 amp supply and an antron99 I heard a California station on lower sideband here in NY and called......got an immediate 5over9 good report and strong signal! The AM transmit I heard it putting out I would describe as clear and adequate, similar to the sound of a Yaesu/Icom on AM. The strongest point of the radio is the sideband, swinging perhaps 40 watts on my meter.....the FM carrier I have measured is 32 watts. The AM carrier is 9 watts, however I see no sign of forward swing on AM with the stock mike on any setting. There isn't anything about the top gun modulator mentioned with this radio, so I don't believe it is so equipped. Perhaps someone can fill me in on this. Let me know if I should see swing on AM with this MD-1 modulator, or does it need to be tweaked? I had Copper do the "tweaks" so I don't know if this was part of it or not. Again, overall, a great radio value far the money I give it 2 thumbs up...73,Lee.............. P.S.- Bruce, the manual recommended a 10amp supply so I wouldn't use a 5amp one-it is suposed to draw 6amps max. |

The supply in the photo ran my IC-230 for many years and it draws about 3 amps on transmitt. My htx-10 draws about 4 amps max within the limits of that supply ( it trips out at 5 amps) but i have not ordered a NEW mag - 257 but supply will be no problem i have a 20 and 25 amp on the bench. |

I ordered a 257 Wednesday and received it Friday.Very fast turn-around. I modified it and with help from Tech808 I got it tuned up.(Thanks Lon) I immediately got on the air & my friends all knew right away that I was on differant radio. I got great reports on the audio. DX was rolling so I tried AM & SSB both and received nothing but good reports. The blue display is very easy on these old eyes. I am really happy with this radio and if it had not been for the forum I probably would not have bought one. Thanks Coppers and Tech808. I love this radio.

Magnum 257 for 11m (Widebanded)
1st Impressions (Hand's On)
Feels a bit tinny. Microphone small and light. Clarifier knob wobbly. Possibly difficult for users of regular multi-band CB radios to get familiar with the menu driven band change system. Would be difficult to function the menu system if you were driving.
Mine had been modified for 11m use and tuned by store before I received it. I only work SSB but it comes with AM and FM as well. No built in SWR meter. Signal meter reading about 50% of reference radio. 5 vrs. 9 plus. Meter calibration problem. Received audio good but internal speaker a little squeaky. The low tone switch certainly helps.
Knobs need some white marking so you can see position at a glance especially clarifier.
Clarifier works TX and RX and didn’t have to move it much off center for good audio.
It is still a CB set at heart and you have to change bands to move more than 44 channels.
Do they have a mod to just scroll thru like a normal transceiver without coming up against the end of the band? It should be an option, as should 5k/c steps. First thing I did was to fix 4 rubber stick on feet to the bottom of the radio so I could place it on the bench and keep the speaker clear. Speaker is on the bottom. Speaker is big enough to sound better than it does. TX audio is very good. When hooked up to the big amp people could not tell I was not on the TS570! (TS570 with 30 watts SSB drives this amp to 500w but the 257 drove the amp to 600 watts!) Other CB’s owned include Ham International Concorde III. (sold years ago), and a SS3900. (Totally bad) Current radios are TS570 and IC706MKIIG and FT817so it is competing with some good radios. First CB radio I have bought in 20 years.
Inside
Not much to it. Everything surface mount except electrolytic caps, cans, transistors and trim pots. Only a few connecting wires. Certainly neat enough. DC in is wound through a substantial toroid before connecting to board. Twin output transistors are connected to heatsink at rear. Doesn’t look like too much to go wrong.
On air
Frequency coverage was 25.160 thru 29.700 in 10 banks of 44 ch. Who or what operates on 25mhz? 5 memories and a last channel recall
Output on full RF power and mic gain controls is about 23 watts or so on SSB. 8 on AM and 23 on FM. SSB audio reported clean and natural under strong and weak conditions. Heatsink got a bit warm after prolonged use but cooled quickly. Ambient about 25 degrees C in the shack with the aircon on. As we live in the tropics I will probably affix a small fan to the back of the heat sink to help it out.
Readout can be either frequency to 5 places or channel number with a band letter.
Alpha channels are indicated with a small ‘a’ after the channel number. No fiddly minus 10k/c switches needed here. Each turn of the channel switch moves the frequency by 10k/c. The channel step (1,10,100 k/c) change feature is negated by the wideband mod and the only thing that can be changed under ‘step’ is where the 10k/c step starts and finishes.
The norm is to set it on 5 which means you change from 27.455 to 465 to 475 etc
If you set ‘step’ to 0 you will get 27.450 to 460 to 470 etc
If you set ‘step’ to 2 you will get 27.452 to 462 to 472 etc and so forth.
No matter what, you can’t step in 1k/c. or even 100k/c if the radio is modified for 11m.
Now I see why many European operators are using 27.572 or 27.577 rather than 27.572.5 or 27.577.5 which I would tune to with my TS570 to go between channels. Makes sense now!
Took some time to get accustomed to the band change method but once you do it becomes 2nd nature. Only problem is that you can only scroll one way. If you are on F and want to go to E you have to go through G H I J A B C D first!
But there is a way to circumvent most of these problems and that is to use the memories.
There are 5 memories that can be programmed into buttons 1 to 5. The trick is to put the frequencies and modes you use regularly into memory so they can be recalled with 2 strokes. To access band F memorize 27.555. To change quickly to 27.550 memorize it and then you can readily use the mic buttons to move up or down to any frequency ending in zero in that band. Give me a 5k/c step please!
To drop to band E from F memorize a frequency in E and you are there in a couple of clicks. Different but it works.
The back up for the memories will only last a few days after you disconnect the radio from the power source. Should be OK in the car but if in the house you could easily loose the memories if you turn off the power supply for too long.
The Buttons and Function Switch
The function switch is the clarifier pressed in and released. The function option appears and will stay there till you do something.
Here is what they do with the 11m mod in place
1 Step Changes the last digit of the frequency but radio still steps up in 10k/c

1+Func Activates NB and ANL circuit.
2 Call Change bands. Each click moves up another band. Up only.
2+func Changes from Ch plus band readout to frequency. Shows alpha channels
correctly. Frequency readout only 5 numbers ie 27.455
3. Scan Scans for and waits on busy channels
3+func Didn’t seem to do anything
4. LCR Last channel recall. Instantly takes you to the last channel you Tx’d on
for more than 3 seconds. Nifty for Qsy’s.
4+func Didn’t appear to do anything
5 Mode Selects the TX mode. AM, FM,LSB or USB. Each press of the buttom
changes the mode.
5+func Low tone for the received audio. Works. I left it in all the time to get rid of
the white noise and reduce hissing.
6 M-Load Press once then you have about a second to press button 1-5 to select the
memory stored there. You have to be quick! Very quick or else it will
revert to the normal use of the button. This is frustrating and you should have several seconds to hit the desired memory button. before it reverts.

Conclusion so far
A good little radio with few bells and whistles and no roger beep. Receives well and gets out with good audio.
retaining the split function in the widebanded mode would have been nice. Unfortunately in this time of low sunspot you will need a linear to break in to most DX. Use the money saved ($200) over a hi power CB radio to invest in a 300 watt linear and you will have the best of both worlds. A bit fiddley to use at first but you get used to it quickly.
What has the lincoln got that this doesn't? SWR meter and Roger beep
Not much can touch it for the price. Impressive little radio.

The CPU in the M257 is programmed to step in 1KHz steps, it is a 1KHz resolution radio. You can also step in 10 KHz.
The CPU mask cannot be modified, a new mask is required if you want to change any function.
