I would like to know if there is a good brand that makes the 572b other than the centron, they are the best but is there another brand out that you know of that is a dependable brand. |

Are the 572b's interchangable with the EL-509 (519)? Can you run 572's in a KLV-1000? I saw this printed somewhere, but I can't remember where. |

Big Thunder I own a AL-572 bought it used ran great for about four months then low output!I sent the amp in where I got it from they said nothings wrong just the tubes are a little weak so I had them replace the tubes(572b). The original tubes Sevtlana 572b-Made in Russia New tubes from Pentalabs Made in China told should be just as good as originals or better! Well I'm back in the same place as before low output. These tubes should last longer than that. I was told that improper tuning could be the cause.I did read the manul and got input from where I got the amp from. I give up since this is a long weekend I'll put the old tubes back in and see what happends. Take care All and have a Good Thanksgiving Weekend! Gage!CEF-114 |

Legend, From the pictures I have seen of the 572B tubes they are 4 Pin tubes where the EL519/6KG6 tubes have 9 Pins. If you click on the link in my above Post it gives you a clear picture of them. Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN |

Gage, TUBE BURN IN Transmitting tubes generally require a “burn in” time to increase emission to its nominal value. In broadcast stations, 100-200 hours at rated filament voltage is allowed for burn in. This initial operation allows the getters, materials which absorb and hold residual gas, to finish the vacuum of the tube in its final operating environment. In an Amateur Radio amplifier, tubes will often require 50-200 hours of “key down” transmit time to remove the residual gas and condition the filament for full emission. It is well advised to allow tubes to operate in standby mode (filaments on, no transmit) for 10 hours before tune-up. The 811A, 572B, 3-500Z, 4-400, etc. utilize a thoriated tungsten filament, which is highly dependent upon sufficient filament temperature to provide adequate electron emission for normal operation. Emission increases as the thorium migrates towards the surface of the filament wire. This is why it is recommended to “burn in” these tubes before operation. QUALITY OF CHINESE TUBES When Chinese tubes were first imported to the U.S., we found quality inconsistent and varied from factory to factory. Early 811A, 572B, and 3-500Z tubes also suffered from filament weakness. RF PARTS has worked closely with what we have found to be the best military electronics tube factory to improve product quality. You could have received what they call NOS (New Old Stock) Tubes. http://www.rfparts.com/tubeapp.html Hope this helps. Lon Tech808 CEF808 N9OSN

The EL509's I believe are the replacement (with modification?) for the 8950 tubes. A cheaper alternative to the 572's is 811A's. |

Prefer Penta's, especially where they are mounted sideways and not sitting vertical. |

So, does that mean that an 8950 will plug right into a KLV-1000 with no modification necessary? I am only asking because I have 8 brand new 8950's and nothing to do with them other than selling them. I was wondering if they could be used as spares for the EL-509. |

Seems I've heard there is some relationship between Centron evolving into Taylor but can't recall right now. I'm very surprised to hear you had problems with Taylor as they have been proven good. I use a Heathkit SB-200 on 20M that still has the original Centron 572 tubes in it. They are about 40 yrs old and I get 600W pep out of them. Are you using your amp on AM and if so what output? Most amateur amps aren't made to push big numbers on AM. Mac |

Seeing as how everybody is talking tubes here, anybody know where to get tube amp plans, ac, or dc would not matter. I just want to build a tube amp. Doesn't everybody?? |
