Hello, I am looking at a Midland 79-290 radio. I hear it also has 10 meter capabilities. Has anyone had any experiences with this radio? I can pick a new one up for around $160 I liked the face plate and it is within my price range. I was thinking of picking up a 2950 but I would like to keep my expenses down to $175 with shipping. Can anyone comment any further on this radio on the 10 or 11 meter side? Thanks Dennis /KB8YGC http://www.kb8ygc.com |

the 79-290 aint a bad radio. with a power mic, they can scream. if you want a good 10 meter rig, drop another 10 bucks and get the magnum 257. you wont regret it

hiya dennis. i've had one of these for years now. my biggest complaint is the channel rejection is a joke. bleedover is terrible. i always wanted to add lou's channel guard but never got around to it. also,in the 10-mtr mode, this radio will have quite a bit of intermod from the 11 mtr band. all in all a good lil radio for the money. oh,one more thing, there is NO FM on this rig as alot of people claim. it shows up on the display but it's actually the AM mode. the FM on the display was for the euro models. wavin a hand from over here in greenville,oh. later.73. Slim, I am just about 20 miles east from you. We will have to chat on 11 meters sometime. I am trying to pick up a CB rig or a 10 meter that I can convert. Thanks for the replies and I may go with the Magnum... Thanks,

honestly that would be your best bet IMO. i've not had the chance to operate a 257,but i've yet to hear anyone complain about them. i'm actually about 6 miles south of g'ville on 121.but,yes,we'll have to hook up sometime. usually hang out at 27.4750LSB or 27.5350LSB. bad thing is i work 2nd shift so i'm limited w/my radio time let us know how it comes out on the rig. Hmmm, I have a good deal on an RCI 2950 that I just can't pass up so it looks like I may be picking up that instead. If the deal falls thru I am going to purchase the Magnum. 2nd shift been there for many years but now I am finally on first shift. Guess that leaves the weekends and holidays. I am working on a beam antenna later this summer so maybe we can chat sometime... Thanks for the replies... |
