I have a 48' tower I'm in the process of putting up with a Maco 3 element. (Not up yet) Now I am offered a 175' tower free for my taking it down. Question: Are there any pros & cons for having an antenna at this height. and would my 3 element be a good choice? |

Davec, I can see no problem's but at that height as long as you had an acre to run guy wire's. Good Choice on Antenna but Hopefully Tech833 can offer you better advice as he is used to antenna's at this height. And he also may have a better suggestion for an antenna at that height. You might also Post this in the Ask The Tech area under Antenna's so Tech833 will see it. Hope this help's. Lon Tech808 PS: Sure wish I had that tower. |

Tech, the 175' tower has been free standing for the last 15 years. I beleive the tower is a Rohn and has been used by a local utility company that now uses a trunking system. No guy wires or lites have ever been used. |

Tech833 I am wondering if there are any disadvantages with a Maco103 at that height. Is there anything I should expect or look forward to? Would if be really beneficial to having it that high? |

Sounds like a great deal, Dave, grab it if you can take it down, sounds like a heck of a chore, but once you get it up, it will be the last tower you have to buy!! |

Coax loss is a bit of a drag, but you can get a preamp that you can mount at the base of th tower, and then a preamp in the house, and you will have no problems. Remember, generally the higher the better. 73's Rattlesnakejake |

Well, Dave. I think I understand your question. If you use 1/2 inch or larger Heliax cable to feed the antenna (for low loss both ways) then you will notice a wonderful improvement in ground wave communications range. Your skywave (skip) will not make much difference over 40 feet above ground. |

Davec By the time you get the beam up there with a mast under it, you will be approaching 200 or more feet. I hope you live way out in the country somewhere because if the FCC ever gets wind of a CB antenna on 175 feet of tower, they'd make you take it down while they and a US Marshal are checking out your cool base station for any illegal radio equipment that may be in your posession. Or they may just take you and your equipment somewhere unpleasent to await your court date. Im my opinion, a setup such as that would be like hanging a sign out saying that you are a illegal CBer. I really don't mean to bust your bubble Dave but I'd weigh all the pros and cons before I ventured into this project. But, if you can get away with it and no one complains, then go for it. More power to ya!! Just be very careful up there. It's a long ways down but at least it wont take long to get there. Jeff. |

You Could avoid that problem by going and taking a silly little test to get your tech license, you take the test a few times on line, go take it, and you are legal to 200ft, unless you are close to an airport. Not a big hurdle to take. |

A while back, in the FCC journal, a CBer petitioned the FCC to allow him to raise his antenna above the 60 foot limit so he could solve a TVI problem with his neighbors. The FCC granted the petition, allowing the antenna to be raised to 120 feet above ground per his request as long as the interference was solved. The CBer was commanded to keep a copy of the grant with his stations records. Everyone lived happily ever after. This could still be done. |
