Hi, I want to get back into CBs, I was into it for a short time in 1976-77 at age 15. I hade a small sears 23ch and a small mobile antenna that I screwed to my dads house roof and a long copper wire going to it(no money for coax).

Now I have the funds that I did`nt at 15 so I`m looking at buying a Galaxy 959 or finding a Ranger 696f.
Can someone tell me whch is the better choice? I want to try SSB this time around. I did here that the 959 is noisy on receive but can this be fixed with a mod. I need alot of help getting started and want to make the best educated purchase.

I will need a pole to mount a A-99 to(heard that is a good antenna). I remember the skip from back then and realy want to give it a try also.

What size amp do I need and which amp would work with the Galaxy 959 or Ranger 696 for skip?

I want to put my antenna at least 25FT in the air and the coax will have to be at least 150FT long from radio to antenna so what coax do I need?

Please help and thanks,

Sorry so long a post but I have a million questios to ask.

Airplane1,

Are you looking for a Mobile or a Base Radio for your setup?

Airplane1,
if I'm not confusing it with another radio the 696f and dx959 have the same chassis or board inside, the differences are mostly cosmetic.the 959 has auto swr that you dont calibrate to read and a 5 digit counter verses a 6 digit counter on the 696f and manual cal for swr.I can vouch for the dx959 as a radio you can be happy with.the noise problem you might be refering to was cured by removing a chip capacitor,I've seen the service bulliten identifying from what ser, number they corrected the problem.
onto the antenna question,I've used the a-99 and will agree for the price it is good.just remember, there is good better and best.(thats a can of worms I probley shouldnt have opened)
rg-8x also known as mini-8 would be sutable for the run you suggest.if you want a premium cable with slightly less loss check into rg-213 or one of it's equivelents.
now for the amp, working skip is mostly a game of watching conditions(propagation)you will see days that a barefoot radio will talk halfway around the world and days you cant talk 40 miles with 300 watts input!although i have yet to own one I see a LOT of good reviews on the klv line of amps on this forum.hope this gives some food for thought and not confusion.by the way, where does the handle airplane1 come from?and welcome to the forum.73's

I would go for the 696fssb and the KLV 500 base amp like The First Sargent ded. She's real happy with the two. As for antennas, try and get a maco 5/8. I have one and I have had no troubles with it, and it is a fabulous antenna! I talm skip with it all the time. I, and many others I'm sure will agree that the Maco 5/8 is slightly better than the a99.

Thanks Dindin,Rattesnakejake. for the info,And Lon- Tech 808, I want a mobile tr-696f, I found a tr-696 FD1,What is the difference?
I just bought a ps-46kx power supply,Will it be enough for a mobile like 959 or 696f and a KLV500 amp. It is rated at 13.5 volts and 40 amp constant and 42 amp surg.

I looked on copper site and the prices are great, What is a peak and tune exactly? Do I need one when I buy or should I just buy the radio without that?

I hope I get up and running by mid or end of summer. My oldest son is moveing out this month and I`m turning his room int my radio room.

As for the airplane handle I love flying Radio control and real planes so just made that up. When I was 15 I used the handle Blue Mist.

Thanks again for all your help!

Well, I believe the KLV550 has it's own power supply. So, you have plenty of power for your radio,
As for the tune and peak, all that means is that one of the copper employees modifies your radio to put out the highest amount of power that it can. You would be looking at about 4-6 watts if you had that radio tuned and peak. By tune, they mean they tune the crystals so they transmit and recieve percisely on the disired freqency. Accuracy is crucial from anything from local talking to dx'ing.
Hope this helps.
