Hal,

It has been so long ago I cannot remember my Fisrt but I can remember Mine & Shirley's Farthest Contact, the SPACE SHUTTLE in ORBIT.

And we Even got QSL card's confirming the contact from Johnson Space Center.

We talked direct with them from our radio thru the Johnson Space Center Link to the Shuttle.

Kind of like using the worlds largest/strongest repeater!

A lot of people do not know that when the Shuttle goes up that they open certain frequencies for people to listen and make contact thru Johnson Space Center and also have special days that they open it up for Schools also for the Student's to talk.

Lon & Shirley

Hey Tech 808, not to burst your bubble but,
From Aerospaceweb.org...
"The only remaining piece of information is the altitude of the Space Shuttle's orbit. This altitude will vary depending on the Shuttle's mission. Recent missions to the Mir and International Space Station have required the Shuttle to reach relatively high orbits of up to 250 miles (400 km) altitude. However, a more typical altitude on a Shuttle flight is around 185 miles (300 km)."
I've covered the latter distance ground wave..lol.
Later,
De Bluesman

Bluesman, good point but you forgot one thing.

Are you certain of the shuttles orbit style and position above the earth?

The shuttle may be 250-300mi about the surface, but what if its on the completely other side of the globe?

One more thing to think about!

Mine (under my own call) was 1500 miles on VHF - FM. Newcastle australia to Aukland NZ summer of 91. 5wt mobile radio, sitting up near the TV transmitters, just in the right place for ducting.

Sometimes it pays to watch TV channels that are notused locally.

OK, then I will just count:

Old Pirate CEF #295 in Auckland, New Zealand.

and

Kiwikid CEF #195 in Hamilton North Island, New Zealand.

On Sunday CEF Net's

This keeps it to longest contact with CEF Member's.

The Shuttle can count as our farthest "NON" Land/Sea/Earth contact.

Now it should be 100% correct.

Worked All Countries / WAC & States / WAS in 10-10 International on ham but not going to dig log books out to check farthest.

Right after I got my VR9000 from Copper my first contact was 90 miles or so up the coast to Anaheim from San Diego from my jeep pushing through a Wilson 5000 and I was thrilled! After using a junk Cobra that would loose contact with my buddy if he went around a bend or over a hill on the freeway I could'nt be happier. Right after that I made a contact in Colorado on SSB and since then with that same setup goin barefoot on SSB have also DXed central Oregon. I also bought a SkyLab antenna from Copper and used the VR9000 as a base station and with a 100 watt amp have DXed New York, Georgia, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Canada all from San Diego, Ca. That got kinda boring though, kinda like having a ton of money and going out and buying a Ferrari and then being all proud that you can drive 160 miles an hour, big deal. The real fun and pride is taking an old Chevy Nova and building that drive train, suspension and engine so it'll do 150. The equivalent in DXing is low power! I beleive it's called QSL, the fun came back when I QSOed 40+ miles on regular am CB on 1 watt.

Hey Lon,
What frequency were you on when you made that contact to the space shuttle and what antenna were you using at the time?
