Hi gang, I'm wanting to install a 30 to 40 foot mast with a 5/8 ground plane from the ground up. How many square feet of "land" would I need to do this safely using guy wires. Also, which is a better radio, the Tram D201 or D201A? Many thanks. Patrick |

The general recommendation is to place guywires 1/3 to 1/2 half the mast height out from the base. So if using a guyed mast you would need at least 40ft diameter area. D0nt forget that non metallic objects (shed, edge of house etc) can incroach into that area if they do not cause problems with the guys. Also safety must be considerd and if a guy can be run to a fence post etc that helps to keep it from being a nuisance or danger than do so. In the past Ive run guys so that the ends are hidden in tall bushes, attached to a 6ft fence or even the house with no trouble. FYI I'd be inclided to break each guywire, using proper hardware into non-resonant lengths - say 7ft. Personally I've never proven if this is better than a continuous length guy, for avoidinig, and problems with re-radiating a signal but work on the principle that "It is not going to hurt". |
