Driving home from work today through downtown San Diego I wondered while looking at the high rises how the DXing would be from way up there. Anyone out there ever take a hand held (CB,SSB,2m,6m) up to the observation deck of a sky scraper and do any DXing? |

I have read about it several times over the last few years in the Ham mags that I subscribe to, but never tried it. But the same principle applys to my QTH. I live in the foothills and can 'hit' several repeaters because of my elevation. Wouldn't it be great to have a 500 ft tower? |

Hi Team,Metro 446,good idea but I suspect most observation deck areas would be swamped with RF from Radio/TV staion antennas which are mounted either above or below you.But if you get the chance give it ago. 73 CEF195 Kiwikid |

I just got back from vacation in TN and was up on Clingmans Dome (5500ft) I was able to talk to stations on CB 75mi away with an HT. My 2 meter was keying up repeaters 100mi away, |

Years back, on the Australian Air Base we had our radio club set up in an old Air Traffic Control Tower (110ft high). We used to hear the disbelief when we tell people "our antennas are 110ft up with only 15ft of coax to the radio". Let me tell you on VHF and HF it was worth that climb. |

My antennas were on the roof of a 30 story building in Philadelphia. I was on the 27th floor with the coax going down through the vent shaft. Nobody could talk over me. I had to buy the supa and his wife dinner at Le Beck Fin, but it was worth it. I move to a new house in New Jersey this Saturday so my signal will suffer. At least I will have peace and quiet and a big yard. 73's Stephen |

When I lived in Joliet, IL, I talked to a guy on the observation deck of the Sears Tower using a Radio Shack CB walkie talkie with just a telescoping antenna. About 35 miles. That was cool. |

High rise DXing? See http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/discus4/board-auth.cgi?lm=1023575447&file=/7750/20611.html The lower takeoff angle makes DX easy. |
