As far as commenting on a Base and , look at the KLV amps, look under topics, enter KLV amps, the 550 is the greatest and the 1000 KLV

I would just add that a really good antenna installation will go a long way in improving your signal, so make sure you got that first.

My (barefoot) Uniden Washington and Imax 2000 get me 30-50 miles local coverage. Beyond that, I can't hear well enough to talk.

If you are going to do some DXing, then I don't think you need more than 300 watts of power to help get you heard through the skip.
A KLV 2 tube amp might work nicely with a minimum of tvi.

I think a tube amp sounds a little better than a solid state amp, and a new KLV is affordable and the EL-519 tubes are inexpensive (by comparison of other tubes).

Wrk3,

My Suggestion would be the MTI (Marine Technology, Inc)
LOW-PASS TVI Filter's.

Been useing them for over 30 years now with no problem's.

Same Company, Same Name.

The Forummaster is checking into getting them for the Copper Member's.

WRK3: I have 2 Palomar amps. 1 is the older TX-75 in the mobile does 100-120 watts on sideband. Due to the fact I don't run AM I don't have an idea what it does on AM. And #2 is the TX-250 made in Oklahoma, here on the base with my 35 amp. power supply, the TX-250 looks nothing like any of the TX-250s in the catalogs. The TX-250 swings an honest 225 watts on high power driven with anyone of 5 radios doing 15-20 watts on sideband into the amp. I have lived at my present QTH for over six years, no filter, no complaints from close neighbors. Yankee

i have to agree with lon on the l.p. filter. the mti is what i use and recommend. b&w (barker and williams) also make/made a good filter. don't know if they are still around or not. the ones i have are atleast 30yr's old.

SitM: Been there done that on both the Cobra 2000GTL and the 2010GTL. The 2010 is no match for the 2000GTL, the 2010 was a bleed box, got rid of that radio in a fast hurry, almost gave it away to see it go. 2 radios are a complete match for the 2000GTL, being the Cobra 148GTL and the Uniden GrantXL. Except for the clock and frequency counter the 2000GTL,148GTL and Uniden GrantXL are all the same electronics on the inside. Yankee

The Uniden GrantXL does not have the same electronics as the 2000GTL and the 148gtl. If you think so, look at schematic diagram of all three radios. The mods on them are not even the same. Thanks-Harve

As far as amps go, a 250 or 300 watt is all you need. To raise reading on s-meter one S-Unit you have to double your power, and most of the time it will not show up on meter and people cannot hear the difference. Save your money and buy the 250 or 300 Watt linear. Thanks-Harve

Look again at Sam's photo facts for the 3 radios they are all one in the same and the mods are all the same, just that the dual clarifier of the 2000GTL has to be tied together. I have the factory service manual for the GrantXL and it is good for all 3 radios with the exception of the clarifier circuit of the 2000GTL. Yankee
