When I was first getting interested in SSB, a friend gave me a Siltronix 1011c, with the only stipulation being that if I no longer wanted it, to give it to someone else for free. That baby was a drifter for the first hour, but it put out 300 watts and sounded terrific on the air.

When I was a young boy growing up on a midwestern farm one of my greatest heros was my brother. He was the oldest of the eight children my mother and father raised on that farm and I was the youngest. I watched him go through his highschool years, through muscle cars through ham radio when I was just a boy. The memories of those days still linger in my mind like the glistening snow on a bright sunny day. When I was only nine my brother moved away and got married. I didn't see him very much and a great part of my life was now empty. On a visit once he gave me a small hand held reciever that he assured me I could hear him talking on late at night when he would get home from second shift from his job. We lived in a heavily wooded area and I found that I could not receive his transmissions unless I would climb the old oak tree in our back yard. I can remember the nights in that tree, the cold October air stinging my skin as if to welcome me to a world that I hadn't as yet experienced. I would wait until near the time my brother would come home and I would listen to him call out CQ to the world that listened. To my amazement the very first time I heard him his CQ caught me completely unready. He called CQ for a distant station on a hill over looking Outer Creek. He said, Bud, (he called me Bud) I know you are there....listening. Many nights I sit in that oak...listening to the world and my brother never missed saying hello to me...from so far away...made him being gone easier. We had so many things to talk about when I seen him. I came home from school one day and I knew that my brother was there because of his car in the drive. I rushed in and found he was in the back 40 hunting. My mother had that smile on her face that told of something waiting for me in my room, where I found a receiver attached to a antenna out high on our television tower. My nights in that old oak tree had ended and I spent many nights listening to my brother and the world from my bedroom. But the memories of the stars and the cold nights listening are still there in my mind as are the memories of a brother that is still my hero to this day.

I posted this in a similar radio internet site on January 21, 2004. Thought this would be appropriate for this post.

I have a friend that got out of radio who gave me his three year old Kenwood TS450. All I had to do was drive him and his wife to JFK airport in New York from Philadelphia. It was well worth the drive.

Haven't had a radio given to me but almost.
Bought a power mic for £5 but it wouldn't work with the Kernow (cheap midland) that I had so I swapped it for a non-working Colt SSB.

Opened it up and turned the pots to half way. Worked beautifully after a bit of adjusting of the pots.
Only problem is that the LSB mode is off freq by 3-4 Kc's and I have no idea how to get it back.

Around here we have a LOT of Farm \ Estate Sale's, where they will sell bunch lot's of item's and keep adding things until they get good bid's.

We get a lot of the Older Radio's and Base Radio's for almost -0- as we always have the other item's we wanted in the first place.

I just couldn’t resist posting this. There is a character in our town (most likely one in every town) that has several radios that cost him absolutely nothing. Unfortunately the radios were not given to him. It makes me want to epoxy razorblades on the back of my 2510, but as screwed up as our legal system is, I would get sued and lose my house.

Well I may have posted this story before but it well worth the repost:....I was 11 years old, had a paper route and delivered papers each evening after school. There were several customers on my route who had radio set-ups in home and mobiles as well. The very last person on my route was an old Santa type fellow who went by the Handle of "CAT" his wifes handle was "Big Barb" and they called their station "The Cat House". In the summer he'd invite me into have Ice tea and in the winter I was offered coffee or hot chocolet. He had the Biggest radio I had ever seen. It was a Browning Golden Eagle Base w/SSB, I was so amazed with it. He would talk all over the world on it and at the age of 11, I had only ever seen a mobile white face Johnson in my uncles truck and was never allowed to talk on it or even touch it at all. Well "Old Cat" would let me talk on it from time to time and It seemed that maybe once or twice a week Mom would have to call on the phone and ask Cat or Big Barb to send me home as I wanted to stay as long as possibile. Well one day as I was collecting payment for the paper, Cat was installing a New radio in his pickup truck. He ask me if I was interested in his old mobile, a 23 channel Realistic w/a Turner M2+U power mic hard wired right into the radio. I ask how much and to my surprize he told me that he'd take the newspaper free for 1 whole month, I said YES SIR!!! at the time the local paper was .60 cents per week which I made .22 per week to deliver. He also gave me an gutter mount antenna which as soon as I got home, it went on the rain gutter of our brezzeway, a car battery, and I was on the air. I was able to chat with Cat and a few others. About 3 weeks later Dad and I found out that Mom was listening and talking on the radio when us kids were in school. Well for her/their next aniverserie Dad went out and bought a NEW top of the line Cobra just out. It was a Cobra 139XLR and had the extras put in it at the same time. We put up a new Starduster. and Mom was so pleased. Of course that meant my little gutter set up was just about useless then...LOL...But I was given full use of the 139XLR. I still think of Old Cat and Big Barb often, I know I thanked them then, But it has been a life long hobby that has carried with me no matter what happened in my life and I in turn have taught my children to use the radio and respect others as doing so in the process. I have sold many radios over the years, at flea markets and in newspapers, But the most rewarding time I parted with a radio was when I lived in PA. I young kid about 9yrs ols wanted to get into radio, his parents weren't working at the time and said they couldn't afford it. I found out where he lived and with his parents permission, while he was in school I sat up a good mobile with a power supply and a used A-99 in his bedroom. I wasn't there when he came home at 3 PM but at 3:02PM there was a call "ON AIR" for Bartender. I think that it was one of the nicest things I had ever heard, the joy in his voice and the repeated thanking for what I had done. In return the young man had his father bring him to my home and he would weed my wifes flower garden every Saturday morning for that entire summer. I miss Old Cat and Big Barb, even still today at nearing the age of 50 years old, tears come to my eyes as I think back on how wonderful these people were to me and just to know....ONCE AGAIN thanks for the memories and the GREAT thing you two have brought into my life. your Friend, with the greatest thanks...OHIOBIKER...The Original "SUPER SPORT" and now TA-5275, but reconized world wide as "575 in Southern OHIO" Walter Ackerman Jr.

Ohiobiker,I'm glad you did repost that story, missed it the first time. After reading it I just sat and thought about my beginings in cb.Very similar!I've thought about all the wonderful people Ihave met and new friends I still meet due to that little box sitting there on the desk! What is it about that radio that draws us in?Myself I'm a tinkerer and a gadget freak.I hate a telephone but will talk on the radio for hours.I can experiment with mics and antennas and if it dont satisfy me,so what I can try something different.Today with cellphones and internet, there is no challenge like radio. On the radio I can communicate and not line the pockets of some bigshot at Nextel,Sprint,Verizon etc!Its keeping up on the local gossip, its listening to a local farmer bragging about his new tractor or making a shutin happy just to have someone to talk to!Ive used it as a tool but moreover I used it just for the FUN of it!Television lost its appeal when we gained 200+ channels and still nothing much to watch. When I make a dx contact and my son says wow ,That says it all! This coming from a 13 year old that is growing up with computers, cellphones, video games. My first license number was KKA3557 if thats an indication how long Ive been into it,probley 30 years or so.And will stay with it as long as it exists.I am currently working on getting my Amature ticket to broaden my horizons, not replace 11 meters. But the #1 thing cb means to me is the friendship and memories it provides!
this rattling on provided by the one and only(as far as I know)Dindin,Cef#291,Unit#4Zero Southeastern Buckeye....73's

I had a mint Uniden HR-2510 given to me today by an old friend who was cleaning out everything relating to radio. He is unfoutunatly leaving the hobby due to age and health reasons. He purchased the radio new in 1988 and only used it for a year. He then purchased a ham rig and the 2510 has been in a box in the closet for 15 years. We tested it today and it worked perfectly and appeared cosmeticly perfect as well. I couldnt belive it FREE! I even offered him some $$$ and he said no way. Now thats a friend!
