On the bench do you have the same screws in the case that hold it to the bracket in the truck?? Look for anything that is different from the becnh test - eg lower supply voltage, longer screws holding it to the bracket, even the tension of screwing it to the bracket may be changing something. Little things can actually make a difference at times - like on the becnh its horizontal but in the truck its probably at a slight angle - this might allow a loose connection to move. Personally I'd make sure, after checkng for any differences, that the front panel connections are tight. |

i have seen radios like that if hooked to the cigarette lighter mess up your freq pretty bad not enough power at times i guess. might be picking something up off of something in line with the lighter plug. |

Possible volt drop in the vehicle and the radio is not recieving enough juice and thus the freq counter is reactting to the drop in voltage ??? Check the source of where you are picking up the voltage to operate the radio with an ohm/volt meter. Let the vehicle idle and watch the meter. If you have a battery/alt problem it will show up. |

thanks, but haven't had the time to check the truck out yet (semi) on the road again, lol but, when its back in I will, power supply, antenna, and grounding system, still believe its in the radio, haven't checked the mod that was done yet, haven't had time but will start there, like all of you said, it might just be the angle or the jar (vibration) that is the cause of it. ..any tech with knowledge of this problem that has input on this would be appreciated. thanks again. midnight |

most cigar lighters are 20 amp fuse, but if you draw 19 amps through that you'll melt wiring, why you ask?Because they used 18 gauge wire,at least thats the problem with my dad in law's setup-cb,5 amps;amp 14 amps wire gets HOT but fuse never wrinkles and audio is very distorted.1996 blazer. |

Run an 8-10 gage line direct off the battery. Yankee |

Semi?? Are you using a voltage Converter 24V to 12V?? If so check that first... |

Sheese,I missed the part about the semi, that makes my first post a moot point, but if any body else has problems running a medium or high power radio from the power tapp or cigar lighter, check the feed wire, the modern car/pickup electrical systems are severely OVER rated and under gauged. |

Bigbob, Not only that but in some cars (mainly Fords I have found) that running anything more than about 2w thru a lighter plug can play havoc with the Engine Management Computer. |

An inductive-capacitive filter may help,or heavyduty choke, people try to remove noise from there radio with these, but they work better for the reverse, removing rf from their power lines, but one more time the major offender of rf in the computer is from the antenna, below roof-line mounts were fine when all we had were points and condenser, but with computers, sometimes you have to use a roof mount or mag mount to keep rf out of the comp. and bond and ground all body panels, such as hood, deck, fenders and roof if nessessary with coax braid(rg8/213),this keeps the radio from loading the body with rf and reradiating it to interior, engine compartment and trunk, thus keeping rf out of your wiring and computer and if you haul a travel trailer, solder three .047 caps across the hots and ground of wiring harness.BULLETPROOF.Bigbob |
