Well I'm getting a decent tax return....so I want to upgrade my radio. I have a Cobra 29 St NW WX. I want a radio with SSB, and would prefer a frequency counter, but its not a huge deciding factor. The radios I have been looking at: Galaxy 949 Galaxy 959 Cobra 148 GTL (No ST!!) Super Star 3900 Ranger 296 I would prefer to stay under $150. I don't really plan on running a lot of power - maybe a KL-40 at most. I'm not looking for something I can heavily mod...maybe a few extra channels, peak/tune, and unlock the clarifier, but that will be down the road. I run a 3' Wilson Silver Load mounted on the bed rail. I've wearched the web for opinions on each radio, and i find good and bad about all of them. So I'm looking for your opinions. I have found Copper beats everybody on price by at least $10...so I'll be buying the radio there in person Thanks!!! Robbie |

Take a look at the Magnum 257--It is a little more than 150 bucks, but it will outperform every radio in your list, and you will have far more frequencies to use, and no need to "modify" it other than converting it for 11 meters, which is REALLY simple to do. |

I agree with Bruce and Pp1616. The Magnum 257 is one of the "non-junk" radios out there. If you want something on the DX Chassis and don't care about a freq counter the SS3900 is a great buy! Either can be had for less than two bills. |

what do you guys think about the Midland 79-290? i really like the features, easy mods, and the size. The features to price ratio is excellent! Robbie |

The only knock on them I have heard is the receiver isn't so hot selectivity-wise. But that's just what I've heard, so take that at face value. |

Been there done that on the Midland didn't care for it, again my rig of choice may cost a little more after it is tricked out with all the frills I like the Uniden Grant XL, not the LT, this is the one that's at least five years old. If you can find one stays on frequency. Very good receive, carries the power from low to high end after channel conversion. yankee |

im not too impressed with the SS3900's sound on SSB. mag 257 does rip though. you wont need a KL-40 with that |

The Magnum 257. The one I have is one talking sucker. Thinking about getting an Magnum Omega Force to use as a base so I can use the 257 as a mobile |

Magnum 257 but if you want to go up go with a RCI 2950DX or a Galaxy 77HML. ( HAS NO FREQUENCIE COUNTER BUT REAL GOOD PERFORMENCE). Have one both radios above. FOX |
