I have been caught, I went to Jail, Paid fines and lost the right to pocess radio equipment for 3 years and was searched on several occasions. All of this was for something I did in 1996 as an 18 year old senior in High School.

But I assume the local police dept wasn't to happy when their entire dispatch system and mobile data terminals were shut down for 3 days by a bored teenager........

I am trying to figure out why CBer's feel compelled to write all these "fireside tales". I work in law enforcement and only became educated about DX'ing after working security at local Hamfests and studying for my license. The bottom line is that 95 percent of ALL police officers couldnt tell difference between a 10 meter rig and a Radio Shack CB. Truckers routinely use CB's and modified Ham rigs with linears on 10 and 11 meter. NO ONE CARES. If they did, the FCC could simply sit at DOT weigh stations nationwide and find a goldmine of violations. Easily done, NO WARRANT necessary. There is NO special "HINT" for dealing with police. There is always some "jailhouse lawyer" out there with some magical way to fend off the police. Try simply not being a knucklehead. Local law enforcement isnt trained to deal with FCC violations and doesnt have the authority to enforce federal statutes. Since the early 90's, most EMT, Police and Fire angencies converted to 800 megahertz and above for radio communications. So, I am wondering how any HAM rig could possibly cause interference on a police channel. Even drive thru restaurants are using 900 megahertz equipment. I had the opportunity to work with the FCC during the apprehension of an individual who sexually assaulted a female while running a pirate radio station. The FCC did not seize his gear and never prosecuted him. His gear was returned and he simply changed locations and went back on line. So, I am finding it hard to believe any "tale" about a kid being arrested and prosecuted for bleeding over a Hardee's drive thru intercom. Catch my drift?

go to any search engine and type in "KE6VNU". The results should give you all the info you want.
I own lots of ham gear, but I also own several motorola radios that range from low band vhf to 800 mhz. With the right equipment, even a 800 mhz type 2, motorola trunking system can easily be shut down. It has happened is Sacramento county in 1997, and it will happen again. When I got in trouble back in High school, The local police dept was still on their old Vhf system and were not on 800mhz yet. By the way, if you want me to explain how to shut down an 800mhz trunking system let me know. It is very very simple.

The kid with the bleed over problem at local church and Hardee's was arrested and fined for disturbing the peace after several warnings.Had nothing to do with the FCC.

If the gentleman was warned several times and continued his activities (especially during a church gathering) that is a demonstrated disregard of an offical warning with continued malicious harassment. Not only does he deserve to be arrested, he also deserves to lose his equipment and get a complimentary kick in the pants. I say he got off easy with a misdeameanor.
I am sure there is a trick or procedure where the 800 megahertz system can be disabled, but its not going to happen simply by keying up on 11 meter, even with a huge linear amp. I wouldnt advertise that I knew how either. It might cost you a knock on your door the next time your local police system is downed by some hack.
All these stories out here suddenly develop in more truthful accounts once they are put to the test. The bottom line is that all these idiots recieved warnings (probably numerous) and they continued their actions in a malicious harassing manner. In the end they got what they rightfully deserved.
I doubt there is any occasion where someone keyed up their big radio, got tracked downed by the "CB Police", bodyslammed and tossed into jail. Here is your simple trick to not being arrested. DONT BE A KNUCKLE HEAD.

your use of a transmitter gives them permission and now with the new federal law allowing local goverment to inforce fcc rules like one of you said most officers dont know a cb set from a toaster they are not trained to handle that Under this law a county or city can pass a law outlawing interfering with consumer products like tv sets then they get you for this violation you have no protection from the FCC because you are not licensed and they have delegated this power to the local goverment nice ha? the local fcc in tampa has busted a number of persons but at all times showed up with a search warnet and a officer to serve it we had one get a 20000 dollar fine and another fined and striped of all licenses just this year

I feel for anyone who catches a federal fine, because they are quite stiff. BUT, this can be avoided by simple courtesy. NO ONE is going to show up to your house with a search warrant and the local police unless you have demonstrated a severe pattern of disregard. Basically being an inconsiderate KNUCKLEHEAD. In every case the FCC or local entity has given more than a fair warning. The new ruling affects no one, it just takes some of the load off the FCC. Believe me, most officers would rather be chasing real criminals than knocking on your door to tell you cut it out. BUT, they WILL be angry if the neighbors continually call them back. HINT HINT. So heed the first warning and youll be fine.

Now I don't want to get off on a rant here....

Hammunition,

You hit the nail on the head! If you don't give them probable cause to investigate you in the first place, you have nothing to worry about.

This means don't be running an outrageous amount of power just because, "you can".

Keep your system healthy and avoid bleedover and TVI problems before they start.

Don't get on the amateur freqs and start harassing people. As a matter of fact, stay off those freqs that are set aside for licensed operators period!

If you think you will be causing interference then don't push your luck and try to not cause it in the first place.

I even talked with my neighbors and asked them if they were getting any interference. Their answer was "no", so i go back to DXing. Does this mean because they said I was not bothering them, I can turn up the heat? No. It doesn't. The last thing I want is for them to knock on my door and tell me that they are hearing me on their clock radio.

I am on a 1100 foot hill here with communications installations all around me. There are public safety, amatuer, cellular, digital pcs, FM broadcast, and microwave towers surrounding my house. Could I run 1000 watts because it's cool? Absolutely! Will I? Absolutely not! Why? Because with a good setup you don't need to run all that power, and talk distance relys more on conditions that how many pills you have!

I worked 25 states (DX), and have held groundwave QSO's of up to 60 miles in the last 2 months using less than 30 watts of power.

You have to use prudence and common sense. That's it.

Believe me CB radio interference would be the absolute last call on the list we would give out in my communications center. However if you keep sending cops out to the same address for the same problem over, and over, and over again, guess what's going to happen?

And if you're one of those people who was told time and time again to "Turn it down" and you don't listen? Well I guess you got what you asked for!

So the next time you decide to "Drop the Hammer", remember, all that pounding might wake up Uncle Charlie and he has a bigger hammer than you do.

Of course this is just my opinion and I may be wrong...

I have to relay a story of a radio rambo that bit off a little more than he could chew.

A number of years back, a clan decided that they would assume control of a local channel. One night a group of gentlemen came on the channel and began chatting. Eventually the "Beverly Hillbillies" began asserting their dominance and ultimately their "champion" began calling people out. A gentleman told the "champ" that he was transmitting from a certain parking lot and had no intentions of changing channels. The "champ" quickly rolled in his rusty pickup, armed with a club and a concealed 357 magnum. Mind you, the "champ" had promised, in street vernacular, a barehanded beating that would hospitalize the gentleman. The Hillbillies decided that they wanted in on the action too and jumped into their jalopies. Upon their arrival they were treated to the sight of their "champion" being stuffed into the rear of a patrol vehicle. Much to their dismay, they discovered that they had been threatening a whole squad of deputies. The now "concerned citizens" alleged they were coming to stop the fight and quickly scurried back to their hovels. I imagine the "family" channel was quiet for awhile.
