I just got the LONG handheld antenna from Copper. What a great improvement to this radio! RX is easily 6-9db better. I am still looking for a source for the "mobile-com" adaptor for this radio.

I HAVE TWO 454'S AND I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND A SPEAKER MIC THAT DOESN'T SQUEAL WHILE TRANSMITTING !
I HAVE 3 COBRA HH 46'S "WITH EXTRA FREQ'S" AND THE RADIO CRAP BRAND SPEAKER MIC WORKS FINE ON THEM !
ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM OR SUGGESTIONS ?

I use a RadShack handheld speaker/mic on my 454. Try using a bnc barrel adaptor and double male adaptor together to make an extender to put the whip base load above the mic plug. I did this to get rid of high reflected power coming back through that plug, causing the squeal and potentially damaging the final. The extension adds about 2 inches of height to the bnc ant connector. The other alternative is to just clip the speaker/mic plug off and put 90 degree mini and submini plugs on instead to keep the mic wires away from the base load. Keep in mind that regardless of how you do this, the coiled mic cord adds a lot of ground potential in proximity to the duckie antenna and will affect the way the transmitter loads if you let it hang too close. I love my 454! I just got the desktop dropin charger(DC-100). The charger will keep it running and allows the radio to use the nicads on transmit for full output if you want to use it as a "base"(on my desk at work on the fifth floor!), but then trickles them back up while you listen, plus it holds the radio upright. I've made quite a few contacts with this setup and people are amazed at the audio quality and the fact that it's a handheld ssb.
