I posted a mod I did to my Antron 99 a while back,in which I added 6, 9 foot speaker wire sections to the bottom of the antenna as a ground plane in a 90 degree angle configuration. I've further experimented with it by adding aluminum pipe to the radiator but this just lowered the resonant frequency by about 5 Mhz.Has anyone tried purchasing the Firestick replacement top whip? I had a friend in the past add a 102 inch whip and he had good results. Well my aluminum experiment didn't work, but the home made ground radial solution worked like a charm.I've lately been playing arround with stepping up the voltage of my transmitter with homemade inductor coils and have been successful. I'm a disabled American Veteran and have tons of time to tinker with various aspects of this radio hobby. If someone out there has been successful in building a home-brew amplifier please let me know and I'll start a future attempt.Catch you all on the radio.J.C.B. |

Not an Antron But.... I have a shakespeare that the top fiberglass half shattered into pieces. I screwed in a 102" steel whip but the SWR's were high on 1. I added about 6, 1" extenders and that brought 1 and 40 even. Now on 19 SWR's don't even move the needle. Gotta love those 102" steel whips. |

Jerry, I used to build amps using 'sweep tubes' and transformers from color TV's and built a few solid state units for mobile use. Send me an e-mail if you need info, they aren't really hard to build, I even built a 2-tube unit using a WW2 Aircraft 'Dyna-motor' for the High-voltage.. it rested between the seats in my GTO and looked scary with the tubes out in the open! : ) -Phil |
