Hello everybody!!! I have a HTX-10 with about 45 minutes of use on it. Picked it up at Rat-Shack (last time I ever buy ANYTHING electronic from there)for $120 on sale last spring. It worked great and I even made a contact from Colorado to Maryland on 29.200 FM!!! Well, sad to say, I had it in the mobile and went to turn it on one day and it didn't turn on. I figured it was just a touchy switch and about the fourth time I tried it it turned on. Well I was trying to have a QSO with a buddy on USB and he said I kept cutting out. I looked at the RF scale and noticed that it was showing full output power when I keyed up on sideband but I wasn't even talking at all. This shouldn't happen on sideband when you dead key. I took the radio apart and looked at the mechanical parts of the power switch and it was working fine, I metered it and it was functioning as it should. Could this be a mic problem or am I just screwed. I now realize that I know little to nothing about trouble shouting electronics. I wiggled every component inside of it looking for a loose joint but I didn't find one. My main predicament is that it only cost $120 bucks and I know that it's like $60 per hour for a tech to look at it, and they have to charge an hour minimum to make it worth their while. But that means at the cheapest I'll have $200 into the thing after shipping and repair and parts if everything goes as easy as it can. Has anybody else experienced these symptoms or know how to fix them easily? If not I really don't know what to do since I just can't see putting money into a radio that was that cheap. I guess I should've spent a few more dollars and ordered a better one from Copper and KNOW that it would've worked. Live and Learn I guess. Any info appreciated. Thanx guys, DAN |

Sorry to hear about your problems with an otherwise ok unit. I too had some problems with the first one of the HTX-10's I had. Volume ,power, transmit distortion,...just a load of stuff. Luckily, I did buy the extended warranty. On the 4th trip back to Radio Shack, I was given a new unit. The manager is a ham so he had some sympathy. The one I presently have works great. I agree with Bruce though...look for solder joints that may be bad. That seemed to be the main problem each time I got the first one back from repair. In spite of repairs that unit was just not a good one. Hope you get it working. These radios are actually pretty decent and when the cycle turns up again, they are loads of fun to use. 73 de KB5LPA |

THe first place I would look on the htx-10 is the of the circuit board or better known as where two circuit boards meet. This would be the face and the main board. If resoldering these connections does not help, Look @ the balanced modulator as the culprit. Thats the big metal can in the middle. |
