I was just wondering what was the most powerful base station that you ever heard of ??? I recall back in the early 80's I read in the newspaper about a cb base up in michigan that was operating with around 27,000 watts !!! Anyone ???

I know a guy that uses an old am radio station amplifier, with an A-99, President Madison, and Astatic S.E.. He almost 45 miles from me and he hits me with about 9 pounds when that that old tube kicker is on! WEW!Only 1 pound with it off!

i was on the FRS radio in upstate NY and i was talking to some guy who was way up on a hill and using a j-pole for his antenna. i gots to build me one of those. he had a solid 20 mile coverage zone at least on each side of him going down the highway.

Why would a person run all that power and use a piece of @#@# antenna like the A-99. I am sure if he had a real antenna he would have more then a pound and not even need the power.

ive noticed a 3 pound difference with one guy a mile away with a dipole vs the a-99. the dipole is a much superior and simple design to the a-99. the antron was 20 feet higher off the ground

with 100 watts i work the world..... and dont tell me its ham radio ...If like mr b said you do it with a good antenna you dont need much power at all it goes for hams too the IQ of the opperator is related to the amount of power ....... in the negitive direction.

Interesting theory Bruce. The IQ of the operator is inversely proportional to the amount of power out the back of their transmitter.

I heard someone out there who's supposidly using a modified Aerocom transmitter PA section. He claims it will do 80kW PEP. Too bad his electrical service isn't up to the task.

Ryan,

FRS is in the UHF band. If your station is on a hill that sees 150 miles, then you will cover 150 miles. If your station only sees 1 mile, then you will only cover 1 mile, that's the way UHF works. It had nothing to do with the antenna he was using. By the way, a J-pole has around 3 dB gain. There are omnidirectional UHF antennas available from Decibel, Cablewave, and others with gain in the 10 to 12 dB range and more.

Mr B.,

What is wrond with an A99? It may not be the very best antenna available, but it is certainly no slouch. Lots of people use A99's every day and get very good performance from them.

I was refering to CB 11 meter base stations, not frs or antennas. I thought it would be interesting to here about power levels that are legendary, MONSTEROUS amounts !

I know of two stations, one in the midwest and one in Texas, the one in the midwest has a 50 k.w. station, not sure of the one in Texas though, but they can be heard in most cases over half of the U.S. depending on conditions. The one that's in the midwest is so strong that he ground waves into most of the surrounding states while talking D.X. Wildbill.

antron was state of the art when it first came out, quality in the extreme, alas good things like this are always subject to the bottom line.
