Well...I got that penetrator antenna I was talking about a few weeks back. After comparing it to the penetrator manual I downloded...I am upset. The antenna I was sent had only 3 top hat radials and 3 ground radials. The penetrator, according to the manual, had 4 of each. No gamma wire either.

anyone know what this pile of junk is that I have here, besides scrap metal?

1/2 wave there good antennas when height is a problem they need only be 20 ft to work well. Used they bring about 30.00 bucks. Sure not a penetrator though. I have used them before and was pleased for what they are.

Sounds like the old Hygain CLRII.Not a bad ant. It's only half wave and has less gain, but still a descent ant never the less.

Just my thoughts.......

The first thing to do is to check the model number against the model number that you ordered.

Keep in mind that many illustrations, unless they are actual close up photographs, often do not show every little thing on the antenna.

Check out the name of the antenna as printed on the box as well. And while you are looking at the box, was the box factory sealed?

There is no box, no manual or anything. I bought this used from a guy selling it in michigan. It appears to be about 20-30 years old. I found a picture of the CLRII and it look just like it.

oh well, live and learn. I got hosed. my fault for trusting the dude.

you got a CLR 2. it was made by Hy Gain. should be around 17-18 ft tall. don't put more than 150 watts into it. it is a really good antenna though. true 3 DB gain.

I bought a "larsen" 2 meter 5/8 wave antenna. There's no doubt that it's not a larsen. Seems to work just fine though.

He may have one of the Radio Shack base station antennas.

It sure won't work as well as a Penetrator, but it will work better than an A99.

well...I measured it and it's 19' 8"...with 9' ground radials. By the age and appearance of the antenna I'm almost positive it's a CLRII. It looks like the pentrator minus 1 top hat element and 1 radial.

Yes, I'm sue it would blow away an A99...But, since it's only a half-wave,I don't think it will compete with my 5/8ths Sigma.

Maybe I'll just try to sell it and recoup some of my $$$...

Now though, I must continue my search for an original penetrator. I'll try to be more careful this time...

the old crlII is as good as anything out there and if its in very good shape will work almost as well as a 5/8 wave...... i would like to see a measured diffrence between this antenna and a 5/8 ill bet it would be under 1 db

I've got an old ground plane it has a 22'6" radiator, three ground radials 6'long and three top-hat arms at the very tip 6" long, what the heck is this?My dad-in-law's dad used this in the early 60's with a Knight tube cb,talked 30 miles no-problem,and talked to the shrimp boats when there was skip.He lived near Kalkaska,Mi.

Bruce, there are still a few of them old magnums around here.I'm willing to bet, they aren't being used anymore. I use to have a few CLRIIs and Penatrators. Now I wish I would have kept them. (:

the clr-2 is an omni, vertically polarized, ground plane antenna.maximum legal height provides the largest signal area. a top hat and a long radiating element create a full 5/8-wave radiator.the clr-2 develops an omnidirectional gain of 4db thats 12.55 watts of talk power for the maximum possible from a single 5/8-wave system. specs.-gain... 4db. power multipication factor...2.5...swr...1.2..overall height..19 feet..6 inches. lenght of radials 8feet.6inches.wind survival..80mph.slide each radiator section appx.2and1/2 inches.(top four sections.radials say 103 1/4 inches.hope this helps you. i love mine. run it with a dx 2527 galaxy and a texas star 350-hdv. talk everywhere well.would not recomend any more power than what im running. only negative thing about it swr rises a little when it rains but comes back down when it quits. hope this helps you out.

I too bought one of these off ebay but knew what I was buying;Rat Shack 21-1133 new old stock made by hy-gain, this one is 19'10",I had one years ago that was 22'6" both had 9' radials, does anyone know how to make this a true 5/8 wave and to handle more power, I've heard of this being done to these antennas before but not how.

I agree with bruce, the 1/2 wave will probably produce just about as good as any 5/8 wave. If you can get the CLRII up about 10' higher than the 5/8, it will probably be just about equal and they really have great ears.

I believe that HyGain made several different CLR antennas and some had a wire wound coil on a 3/4" piece of conduit inside the base that served as the matcher and it would handle about 300-500 watts OK. However, you may have the one with a small mica board inside with a foil wound coil on it, and that one will not handle much output. I think the difference might be realized between the 3 ground radial version and the 4.

If you just have to know if you have the one with the mica board in it, and you are planning to run more than about 50-100 watts and maybe less, then remove the single screw from the base element and slip it up so you can see the stub base inside the element. If the base part that goes inside the tubing has a 3/8" x 3/8" stud sticking above the top then it will not handle very much RF. If the base is flat with this metal stud down inside the base insulator, then it will have the wire coil noted above in it, and you can run some RF.

If you got this antenna on ebay and it was describe badly and you feel you over paid, then you do have protest rights and the problems resulation committe may be able to help you. But, you have to start the process and follow proper procedures.

Bruce is right, you do not have either version of the Penetrator 500.

Thanks for the info. I have both base elements and took apart the older and taller antenna base elememt and it had the mica board in it,at the time I had wondered why the new one I got off ebay looked different, now I know,I also noted that the one with the mica had a 4 hole SO-239 and the other one has a SO-239 with a washer and nut holding it.I will leave the antenna as is (1/2 wave).I was looking for a CLR2 on ebay when I saw this one and knew it was the same thing. Thanks again for the info. on the base element, that really helps.

I have the original paperwork dated 1975 for the hy-gain CLR-2 and it says it is a 5/8 wave not a 1/2 wave antenna.

I just had a 4 Radial Penatrator given to me. Approx. 20 yrs old. I took it apart, cleaned it, put it back together. Now it works, BETTER THAN THE ANTRON-99 DOES. Good luck .

Conduit1, my paperwork says " Has electrically extended 5/8 wavelength radiator " which I don't believe is the same as a true 5/8 wave. I believe the true 5/8 wave height is around 22ft. and the '67 paperwork I have for the hy-gain CLR2 says in the specifications that the mechanical height of radiator is 19'10", go figure.

an idea. why not measure missing parts and make your own parts? in some parts of the world they actually do that.any machine shop would make it if you had specific specs.. i have done it also.
