If everything such as microphone and tuning are the same, they should all be the same. |

What ever you do,let 307 do the 30 dollar tune-up,I let a local tech do my eagle-2000,no comparison in audio,my dx2517 is LOUD!!!!,on the other end.I would say twice as LOUD!! |

Of the ones you mention the 2980 should "sound" the loudest. Unfortunately a Cobra 29 will put it to shame in audio ;) |

How can a 2980 be louder than the others when they all have the same circuitry? |

Well i have it down to the RCI 2995 however. I have a high drive base amp and id like to use the 2995 as a driver for it much like i use my old ranger 3500 100 watter... ---307--- With the tune up what is the max the 2995 will do on SSB and AM? |

there talking audio power, not rf power. in the audio section of the radio that makes your modulated voice and not the rf output section witch adds the rf carrier to it. in rf power the dual 2312's win over a single 1969 no contest.(unless moded for a mrf 477) but some of those cobras have alot of audio drive. ie the 2000, 142, 148, 29, my favorites for the cobra lines. although with a very small amount of work you can change componets in the ranger / galaxy lines to scream and have the higher rf power as well. either way there all fine radio's |

The 2980, 2517, 2527, 2985dx all use different boards. You want nasty punchy loud, find a Cobra 29,25, Uniden 78,68. Do they show more power? No. Louder? You bet. I'm no engineer so I can't give you techie reasons, just many years experience. AM only radios are almost always louder than their SSB counterparts. A Connex 3300 (Galaxy 33) is louder than a 99. Don't think so? I'll show you. The closest I've seen are the Delta Force and Maverick, but the Maverick still has the edge, and the 29 and 148... the 148 is close. |

Ten Years ago I ran a Cobra 25LTD with a D104 as a base radio. Everyone said I was the loudest in town, and when I told them what I was running they just laughed.(thought I was full of B.S.) For some reason those little Cobra 29s and 25s really kick some butt. Now I run a 2995dx with a D104 and I dont get half the compliments I got back then. |

Ya know, i was thinking if i could find a good used 29LTD classic (not soundcrapper) id get one just to use to talk around here locally since most everyone talks SSB. Then id save my 3500 to talk SSB! |

The people I talk to with the DX2517 Galaxy say that it has the best quality audio they have heard. I can also seem to talk farther with the same power than other radios. Tune-up done by Copper and it was worth every penny. |

The 2517, 2980, 2527 and any older flavor of 2950/70/90 (not the dx) use different boards, but the circuits involved with AM and SSB modulation are the same. At least according to Lou Franklin's Galaxy Service Manual they are the same. |

So would a galaxy 33 sound louder than its cobra 29 counterpart or will they be the same? |

CM3885: You outta think about what you want in a radio for long term use, if your satisfied with 40 channels, the 29s are ok, but think about this, your gonna have to spend bucks to get the thing to talk like you want it, if you want more than 40 channels, your gonna spend another 50 bucks or so. You might want echo, another 40-50 bucks, if your a roger beep man, more bucks. For less money you can get the VR 9000 or several more radios that have all the extras, lots more talk power than the 29, don't require any major mods and have sideband. If you like to talk skip, read this forum on how much better SSB will perform, and especially on the out of band channels. Thats my opinion, and its really nothing to me, but I hate to see someone spend big bucks on a radio they want be satisified with very long. I don't know many serious CB's that would run a cobra 29 very long. scrapiron |

Ditto Peddler, the 4800 is a good value--compare it to the Ranger 6900hp--basically same radio, less $$. |

Well in the long run i think ill get the RCI 2995. Ive looked into it for a while and thats what i really want... Besides i cant find a old style 29 that i want anyways... I talk SSB but i also talk AM on the reg 40 and the 29 would work well for that and no i dont use echo or a beep. |
