I was gonna add 20' to my tower. My coax is about 6 months. I know you should change it about every 2 years. I have 1.5 years left on it. Will a connector hurt me, cause bleeding, ect. I was thinking of putting arrestors at the bottom of the tower where the connectors would be and ground them ya know. Looks like that would help? |

Hi Fdirsh, Nah, it won't hurt nothing. Just make sure that you seal the barrel connector to keep the moisture out. Putting in an arrestor anywhere is always a great idea, nothing beats a good ground. My antenna setup has 3 eight foot grounding rods all tied in together with a 6 guage copper wire running all the way up to my I-Max 2000 with a ground plane kit thats stacked up there on top my beams. Here in Florida it's a necessity. Good luck and happy Dx'ing... |

In my personal experience.... It should not be a problem. I would however, from experience offer some suggestions. 1)Do not overtighten. 2)Make sure your connectors are placed/soldered on each end properly. Use a VOM to check the solder job. Replace the old original connector if it looks worn so you have two connectors of the same age at the splice. 3)After you assemble the connector wrap some good electrical tape around the connectors to both seal the splice from the elements and keep the outside of the splice insulated from the tower (much like the jacket of coax protects the copper shielding of the coax). That is about it. DE |

Why change coax every 2 years? I never heard of that one......My coax has been up for 20+ years. |

Fdirsh, Use a good brand (Ampehenol) Connector, Tape or use clear silicone to keep moisture out. You should be alright. When it comes to connector's I always use Amphenol they run a little more (maybe 30 to 50 cent's) but I have never had any problems with them in 25+ years. If you spend a little extra to start it will save you in the long run. Another thing is with good coax you should never have to change it every two years. The only exception would be if it is damaged by Storm's Lighting, or other damage. Just my thought's! Lon tech808 |
