think about this if a 5/8 wave base ant. is better than a 1/2 wave . how would the 1/2 wave do with ground plane on it would it be better than a 5/8 wave WITHOUT the radials.id really like to hear everyones opions on this. or if anyone has tried to compare the two |

The 5/8 wave antenna still would have more gain in the major lobe. However, dictating where that lobe goes is another story. If a 5/8 wave is sending its major lobe 10 degrees above the horizon and a half wave was sending its major lobe (although less powerful) right at the horizon, the 1/2 wave antenna would have 'gain' over the 5/8 antenna. Do not confuse GAIN with TAKEOFF ANGLE. They are not the same. |

Dale, the differences in real results are subject to way too many variables to make a cut and dry determination like you pose. Theory will show a little difference under certain conditions relative to earth, height, and reactive stuff close by, but the difference here may be less than 1 db, and that is generally not even noticable to the ear in real communications. It sure won't make the difference that will make or prevent a contact. The quality of signal and audio is probably more important to communications than any differences you might find between the 1/2 wave and the 5/8's. Some talk about this factor like there is the difference between night and day, but I have never been that impressed. There are many more considerations that can be made that might make some differences in your success at radio. Even the way you talk, can matter. If you see an S-unit or more increase in signal, then you are talking about a difference that might matter a bit. |

I have talked to alot of people running the ground plane kit and they don't notice ANY improvement whatsoever on their A-99's. Again, the advertising dept. prints up all the claims of gain for antennas, not the engineering dept.. |

Since we're talking antennas my base antenna (MacoV58) is on a 30' tower with a tree directly to the west of it about 20' away. It's not anything real thick like a fir so will it make a large impact on signal transmission in that direction? Sounded real technical huh but I'm just wondering as my brother lives in that general direction about 12 miles away. |

You RANG ?I tend to agree all the 1/2 wave and 5/8 waves ive played with i found very little difrence as for the groundplane kit none at all |

thank-you everyone i like to hear about real life experiences on this kinda subject. it was interesting bullseye if that tree was mine it would meet mr chainsaw. |

Dale,I've been running the A-99 for about 10 yrs and my bro-in-law bought a new A-99 w/GPK kit and we put it up on my 40' push up pole after taking mine off and couldn't tell any diffrence. That was my own experience.Stepchild |
