FM does not require a different antenna. Most folks I've heard on FM are running mobiles, so I'd say vertical is fine, although in reality, horizontal would be optimum for DX. FM won't get out quite as well as AM for DX, but on the other hand, it's more immune to noise, and a strong FM signal will capture the receiver and you'll hear virtually no background interference from electrical sources other than radios. You won't hear a lot on 11m FM. Years ago, there were lots of folks goofing with it, but seems this time around(solar cycle) it's rare to hear anybody playing with FM. Some truckers use it. One of the problems is that FM splatters out to the edge of the channel and more, depending on how the radio has been tweaked. If you are on SSB and somebody keys up on FM, it makes a nice racket when they modulate. SSB tends to really make a lot of noise on typical FM export radios, so again, FM is not well suited for cohabitation with SSB, in my opinion. I like FM, and I wish more folks would use it. Technically, FM mode is illegal on 11m, so fat chance hearing much down on the regular 40. |

Fm is a great mode!! We have an FM call in net every Thursday night local time Ohio. The deal with Fm is that you turn up the squelch till there is no backround hiss. I have talked FM up 2000milel(skip) but 50miles is easy!! You do not need a special antenna!!! I have an FM capable amp so I can reach out. We use 27575 here for FM. |

Intresting with the bandwidth of a FM signal going as high as 16 khz and 8 a given why would you want to put your self 25 khz away from 27.550? Everyone knows im a LEAGAL fm a holic but still its not a mode that goes well on a crouded band like CB. Its advange is noise limiting on ground wave but phase distortion is a killer on skip. Sorry this mode unless the FCC would open up new CB FM only frequencys is a wrong mode to use 707 is right it dosnt mix with SSB and takes up much to much room. |

Yapper, i'll listen for you also, I like FM pretty well. We use to have a group here that had a FM net with a rollcall night. But as CB is on a down side right now because of the skip and other reasons, they quit the net. As far as Amps, any of the AM amplifiers will work ok, just be sure your radio wattage is not too high, or they will heat up. 50-100 watts will get good coverage on a quite night. You gotta watch some of the Ham radios, they go to full output on FM. scrapiron |

Yapper FM IS my mode im on 29.6 all the time ( Look for me at 330 pm est weekdays ) Ive been a user since the late 60's on 440, 220, 144, 52 MHZ and 10 meters and know the mode well. BUT using it on even the freeband frequencys dosnt make sence to me. Just for the fact that your spread out very near a calling frequency would not be the way I would do it A min space of 25 is too close there are a lot of radios that with power mikes cliped limiters .... i hear them on 10 meters ... can be heard out 20 khz but to each his own... As for amps any amp should work. I read your post i know your working " after skip is gone" As for skip it is the WORST mode for skip the phase distorion is very high sometimes so bad that signals are unreadable .... this is not a problem on AM or SSB. For what it was intended for its the BEST mode for mobile use a good reciver ( mine is .3 for 20 DB quiting ) once you hit a limiting level almost all background noise goes away GREAT in a car. |

Bruce, is there still a Virgin Islands 10 meter machine on 29.620? I used to listen to it every now and again (I don't have code yet) It was one way in which people inside each other's skip zone but outside of groundwave distance could get together. It was especially good for the midwest, where I am (IL) as we seem to have a path to the carribean even on light solar days. |
