The melaka only has one meter. I hate that. Its ugly. Ruins the whole radio. Why couldnt they spend $.50 on another meter? Besides I wanted an Excalibur for my collection. |

Last I checked, there were three radios that said "Excalibur" on the front. The first one had the name "Courier" on it, and was a 40-channel ONLY radio. Another one had all the extra channels, and said "Made in Japan" on the back. Stay away from that version. It wasn't quite ready for prime-time when they shipped it. The one that says "Excalibur SSB" is the 'export' version made in Taiwan, NOT Japan. This model was followed by the Galaxy SSB and "Echo SSB" models. Both of them had no counter, like the Melaka. You could think of the Melaka as the next generation after the "SSB" model radios. The Melaka is a later design, with fewer odd "quirks" than the older "SSB" and "Excalibur" radios. On the other hand, if it's just for a "shelf" collection, who cares how well it works? Even though the front panels look surprisingly similar, the models from 10 or 15 years ago won't compare well to the newer ones on performance or reliability. 73 |

fdirsh, your right, I just enlarged the pics and its not like the ones i've seen before. The ones I've seen had a band switch, and the front was kinda brownish color, best I can remember, its been several years. |
