Hey Taz i have this problem with my melaka and i was wondering if you could help. MY problem was i was That i took a linear that i have a 10 tube phantom and everything was fine and thin all the sudden the radio shut off can you help

You mean it just died? hmmm
could be a few things.
I am guessing the fuse or the powersupply.
Replace the fuse and check the power supply. |

Hi Cracker,
If the radio comes on, transmits and receives normally with a new fuse, consider that this amplifier might really hurt it next time. If it blows the replacement fuse, it got hurt this time.
The usual culprit is worn-out relays in the amplifier. Relays just wear out. The Palomar 300A is particularly famous for "poofing" a radio final transistor when the relays go bad. The Phantom will also get this way, if it gets enough miles put onto it.
If you decide to run this amplifier again, I suggest placing a SWR meter BETWEEN the radio and the RADIO socket on the amplifier. With the amplifier KEYED, set the calibrate and read the SWR on this meter. I predict you'll see 3 to 1 or higher feeding into the RADIO jack. The small screw in back next to the RADIO jack is for adjusting this. Makes the radio breathe a lot easier when it's not driving a high SWR. If it's a really OLD Phantom with the preamp switch (BIL) in back you'll see a high SWR on this meter with the amplifier turned off. This is one case where older is not necessarily better.
