hello, i am sam 123upper michigan and i have something i have noticed and was wondering if this was happnin all over the world or just in my little hick town. my target today is computers good or bad. i know competer are good for imformation, the biggest library on earth but what concerns me is the flip side of this one. we used to have a large c.b. club in my little hick town of newberry(about 40 members) then the usual happened with wars and power struggles, that kind of stuff and the club was done. well now couple of years have passed and things have cooled down and we are tryin to get the club goin again and all people wanna say now is," why would i want to talk on the c.b. when i have a computer i can talk around the world without even tryin" now personally i always thought that the struggle was half the fun.. the upgrading of equipment, the tower parties and the coffee breaks. the brotherhood of the c.b. is practically dead up here now. now am i just old school and to set in my ways to see the light a diffrent way or has yahoo chat, msn chat and aol token away a part of a history, a way of life? please sound your voices and give me your opinions all would be appreciated. thank you for your time and 73's people.. 123 uper michigan the 4 watt golden voice of the taquaomenon swamp.... were out

Re 123

Technology is what you make of it. Remeber, TV killed the art of conversation just as cell phones helped to kill hobby radio.

I've been observing the 'defection' from the radio to the computer for a few years around here. Slowly at first, but it built up speed.

What I have been telling people is that as soon as some computer hacker figures out how to "key" on their computer communications, they'll be back on the radio. Until then, don't count on it.

Sometimes progress and advancement is just plain boring, and kills all the fun. Sure, a cell phone is more practicle than a radio, but how many cell phone clubs do you see? BORING! I only use my computer as a information source. (and i'm an internet tech!) Chat rooms were fun for about the first hour and after that I could care less. I'm still trying to figure out if my community is in one of it's normal cb low cycles, or if computers have done unrepairable damage, so i'm in the same boat as you. As little as 8 years ago, I was in a CB Mecca. CB parties, hundreds on the air, the works! You could sell the TV and never miss IT! I've recently returned to the radio and i'm now hanging in there hoping for the good times to return?

Bruce, No need for anymore hobbies. I'll tell you guy's about my current project, as I think it will of interest the Hams on this forum, and perhaps others too. I fly radio control helicopters and airplanes. recently I have installed a 2.4 ghz audio/video tramsmitter, color dsp camera TNC, video overlay board, GPS receiver, and GPS autopilots onboad the plane.

Project 1
I can now fly the aircraft via the video feed. The ground station consists of the 2.4 ghz receiver, Patch antenna, zagi antenna, laptop computer, TNC, and this is feed to a pair of sony glasstron virtual reality glasses. The plane is flown as if I'm "IN" the plane. I view thew video from the plane on what appears to be a giant 6' tv, using the video glasses. I split data from the gps 3 ways and sent one feed to a video overlay board. This displays gps data such as speed and altitude in the corners of the screen, giving me a "top gun" heads up display.

Project 2
The Gps is connected through an autopilot to the planes rudder, allowing the plane to fly a mission, using gps control only, to any preprogrammed waypoint. the GPS dats is also sent to a TNC, (tinytrac) and then to the audio channel of that 2.4 ghz transmitter. On the ground the received audio is sent to the audio input of the laptop. Win-APRS software is used to show a moving map of my area along with the current location of the plane.

So, in a nut shell....
I'm able to take off and turn control over to the GPS autopilot. The plane then fly's off to some distant preprogramed location and returns back to the launch point, all under gps/computer control. During the mission, I'm able to view the current location of the plane on the laptops displayed map, and i'm able to view the the entire trip, in real time, from the aircraft " with heads up dislplay", using the video googles. Anyway, thats what I do went the skip is bad..hehe :-)

you know i have been off the radio thing for about 4 years we in the little state of iowa had our little group that had 50 some acting members
and we kinda went to a point of coofee breaks and tower raisin parties even had bi-annual meetings until somebody thought we needed to run the club asa business everybody went there own way and deep into computers and now one of the main cb group leaders and i are trying to bring in the club thing again and we are getting why when we can talk across the world on computers. well its the challenge behind it wheres the gusto we once had now i dont care who comes back in our little area as long as i dont give up on the radioand like other posting i too liked the chat rooms for so long then its boring have to find something more challenging like bringing out the radio equipment and burnin out the dust and cobwebs....lol

Czar,

I heard some slow scan on 27.425 last night. I don't have my radio by my computer, just 6 meter for SSTV. I could easily hook it up if I made an adapter with 1/8" phone jack because the HR2510 has that stupid molex thing on the back instead of a reg. external speaker jack. Maybe this weekend.

CB+Computer=Fun
