A friend of mine who works at a golf course ask me what would be best for transmitting between course workers. He had seen the FRS radios and wanted to know if that would work. I told him I didn't think so because FRS was a public service and not a commercial service. What would be best for a golf course? |

Re Jim... I agree with Taz. FRS radios are less expensive. If they (the owners) wanted to perform an experiment to see the use of radios is economicly feasable as a valid investmet compared to the daily use they will get then by all means do try the FRS radios. Their range is 2 miles stated. My boss has a golf course, a 9 hole mini course. We occasionally use the FRS radios due to the small size of the golf course. For our small lot they present no problems. But then we do not use the little radios for daily use either. They are usually used as courtesy radios for the people who hire the course for golf tournaments. I guess it make them feel like they are getting a better service if they are offered some type of radio communications. And if then lose one of them then no big deal. We only lost less than 20 bucks. However Taz is correct in that if once you determine that it is beneficial to use radio communications on a daliy basis then the best course of action is a well made commercial radio. You might remind them that such radios are definately not inexpensive and they will require a license to use them. The durability of the well made commercial motorola or other well made commercial radio by far outweighs the low price of the FRS for daily commercial use. If however the golf course is not too large they just might find the inexpensive FRS radios to be quite suitable as courtesy radios. |

I don't think the FRS radios will have the necessary range because it's a fairly hilly 18 hole course. I looked up some info on the MURS radios and since they output 2 watts they might work. What brands do you recommend? Thanks for the replies. |
