CAN ANYONE HELP I JUST SWITCHED IP's (BAD MOVE) and i let the local phone carrier talk me into using them and getting billed with phone bill. PROBLEM I have had them for 1 week now and i get a pop up that says: I required update is needed for your dial up connection. so i have no choice but to click OK well prior to this friggin update my connection was 52000 bps now it will only get as high as 43000 bps RARELY!!!!!!! mostof the time its 33000 the IP says my phone line must have a bad connection (they own that phone line) but when i use GATEWAY GO BACK to before the update i can connect at 52000 bps again. MY OPTIONS? 1. DROP MY NEW IP LIKE A HOT ROCK (HMMMMMMMMM) 2. GET MY OLD IP BACK with NO SUPPORT UNLESS its 9-5 m-f grrrrr 3. Figure how to get rid of the update and avoid the future updates? |

SBC Ameritech will try anything. Very unscrupulous. Had a call from them last week wanting me to try their DSL for 29.99 per month. I told the rep that what little I did on the Internet, E-mail etc, I didn't need high speed. that I was happy with my AOL. his response was "But you dont have AOL through ameritech" tried to get me to believe that i would get Aol high speed through Ameritech for only $29.99! I told the rep about somebody else that had High speed Aol through the cable company and got 2 separate bills, 1 for the High speed cable access and another for the AOL. He assured me that I would only get the 1 bill. Got him to slip up and say that they would be my Isp (which means I would have 2 bills if I wanted to keep my AOL) i then Immediately hung up on him after 10 minutes |

Moderator 558 Ok, first of all your going to confuse people. You switched whats known as an ISP INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER You are saying IP INTERNET PROTOCAL Second the update is (chances are) just an updated dialer with a new interface and maybe some new options (I.E. spy ware) The reason your connection is slower is probly one or more of the below. 1. Your new ISP's closest C.O. (Central Office) which you dial into is farthar away, or there is a bad connection somwhere between you and the C.O. 2. Your new isp puts a cap on connection speeds. I suggest you go back to your own ISP. Funtimebob Yes, you would have 2 bills! Aol actually offers their own dsl. |

One thing you can try that worked real well for me is to update you modem driver, I went from about 28.8 to around 75.0. All you need to do is find out who made your modem, this can usually be found in the device manager, Go to www.56k.com and look for a updated driver for your brand modem, save, go back to the device manager and follow directions to update from disk. Like I said, it worked for me, but it's worth a try. |

75? allthough that is possible but you must be really close to your CO. There are also updated modems beyond the standard 56k. There is not a v.92 modem which uses a little better compression and enables somwhat faster connection. |

I have a friend that got me a good deal on some ISDN cable that I had put in the house, that helped a little. |

isdn cable? you mean cat 5? Catagory 5 cable? Well I doubt it helped unless you had a bad conntection in your house somwhere. You have to keep in mind that the signal is only coming to your house at a certain speed. |

I use a cable modem and love it. I called about the DSL in my area but I am 8 load coils away from my CO. Too far! I got my cable modem for $39 a month and my download speed is normally around 350-500 and my upload speed is around 250-300. Its fast. I was suprised how much faster is was than an ISDN line. And cheaper too! |

My house is 25 years old so the phone line in the house was not what you would call, good, so i'm sure that was most of my connection problem at first, I've got a cable modem now and it's worth every penny, instead, of 20 minutes to download a mp3 it only takes about 45 seconds! |

ISDN lines are expensive. I run cable and I get about 3000kbps (3meg) down and about 300kbps up. |

You guys make me jealous talking about those fasta** connections while I gotta live with this old dial-up isp, tops is about 45 kbps. Thats the price you gotta pay if you don't want close neighbors, and live on a mountain top for good radioing. However, help is on the way, DSS now is offering direct internet off the satellite. They've had the "receive" working good for a good while, and now have the "send" working also. It's still pretty expensive, but what the heck, its only money, right? ha |

haha like an oc-255 connection at about lets say 13,219.200 megs per second. thats 13 gigs 219 megs So look at it this way, You could transfer your whold Hard drive in less than 6 seconds depending on the size of your hard drive.

Having fiber optic phonelines doesn't mean anything if the telephone company doesn't offer broadband. |

Scrapiron, when did we say anythng about fiber phonelines? Who said the phone company had to offer the Broad Band? But! If you did have a fiberoptic phoneline, you would get a true 56k connection!!!!!!! Hey bruce are you 3M certified? I am! |

Not always true Taz, we have fiber optic lines, but the phone company doen't provide IS, a private company is the ISP, so we gotta go thur their computers, then thur the local private telephone company, 45-46 K is tops, and I'm just 3-4 miles from the ISP. |

I hear that from a lot of AOL users, guess they've got too many members and not enough servers. My isp is pretty good for a dial-up, no problem getting on, never get kicked off, and mine is online about 16 hours a day. |

Actully I reciently got a 2nd phone line just for my puter and fax machine. The lines in the house are new......outside on the poles and such they are 40+ years old.If I get booted so do half of my "buddies" on my list. When I (we) try to go back online we all get the same message "Updating aol database" and we cant get back online untill it's done counting from 0% to 100%,sometimes several times in a row. Sundays between 5pm and 8pm is the worst. We cant even access aol for over a couple of minutes w/o being booted.Switching access numbers doesn't help, theyre all doing updated at the same time. What is an update anyway? |

Call your phone company and complain about not getting proper advertised service. |
