Hi...I am looking for anyone who can tell what this amp is supposed to put out and why it makes a bit of a high pitched sound that increases in pitch til it is like a ringing in the ears while the power is turned on. it starts as soon as the power is put on and stays until you turn it off. Otherwise it seems to work well enough with a dead key of about 45 watts with a new pair of 6JU6 General Electric tubes. You can e-mail me at ns.carrick@sk.sympatico.ca Thanks... |

Neil, sorry I am no help with your amp but you may have different results by posting this same question under the "Ask a Tech" section in the amplifer subcategory. Many of the Copper techs only rarely check the open forum. Hopefully someone out there on the open forum may give you some answers, but posting there as well will also give you a shot with the techs. Best of both worlds. Good luck. Alsworld |

Sure sounds like a mobile amplifier to me. The "singing" you hear is the DC-to-DC power supply that steps the battery voltage up to about 800 volts to feed the tubes. It's annoying, but this is one thing that makes solid-state mobile amplifiers so popular. On the other hand, if it's a base amplifier, something is definitely wrong. A 45-watt carrier sounds about right for two small tubes like 6JU6. What you will read for swing depends on the wattmeter. Just make sure it's peaked for the channel you are on. That's the other drawback of tube amplifiers, they are not broad-banded by nature. Moving up or down 10 to 15 channels from the one where you peaked it will usually cause a noticeable drop in power. Running it too far from the 'peak' can be hard on the tubes. 73 |

Thanks... I was just curious if it was normal or if I had some problems to get checked out. I feel much better now.. It is a bit of a strange noise but not impossible to live with. I have a small solid state (rated at 200 watt)amp as well and it doesnt make the noise at all. It says it is a Commander..looks identical to a Palomar, just different colour. It seems to have about a 50 watt carrier on the same meter. How do they rate these for their power output? Is it just what it is capable of at its peak? Thanks...Neil |
