Now This is strange ! DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 8, 2002) – APCO-International today expressed concerns about the serious implications of a new wooden magnetic wall paneling being marketed as a solution to pesky cell phones ringing in theaters and restaraunts. The announcement from Iwate University states that the new magnetic wood is packed with minute magnetic particles called nickel-zinc ferrite designed to block radio waves and the new wood can be used to make doors and walls for rooms or even entire buildings. “Blocking signals to limit cell phones from causing disruptions might seem like a benefit. We are, however, urging people to consider the much more serious problem that would be created by blocking essential radio signals used by public safety personnel and the blocking of calls to 9-1-1. The loss of these critical emergency services would far outweigh the small benefit of silence in movie theaters” said APCO International President Glen Nash. The availability of effective radio communications is an essential element in enabling police, fire and EMS personnel to handle emergency situations quickly. Disrupting those radio communications would significantly complicate the response, potentially leading to increased harm to the public including serious injury and death. Furthermore, there is no way to distinguish between an inappropriate cell phone call in a restaurant or theater and a call being made for a valid emergency purpose. Use of the cell phone to call 9-1-1 in times of emergency would also be disrupted by these "blocking" devices. APCO International understands the social inconvenience caused by cell phones being used at inappropriate times and in inappropriate places. But a broad-brushed "solution" such as this wood paneling or the use of radio signal jamming devices at public facilities carries far too many negative implications to be a reasonable solution to the behavioral problem. The importance of effective public safety communications prevail over the minor benefits to be gained from blocking cell phone usage. |

Man, sure seems more Americans are upset by legal cell phones than illegal 11 meter amplifiers! ha ha ha ha ha Sorry Bruce my friend, just couldn't resist a little humor. It used to be young children screaming during weddings, funerals, etc. that upset the public. Now it's cell phones. Comments meant only in a humerous way I assure you. An interesting article for sure. Future implications could be interesting??? Alsworld |

Thinking back to the time of the caveman, 1951. Hmmmmm I wonder what we did before the invention of the cell phone??? Perhaps use the the phone with two wires running to it? Naaa I think mostly we just waited untill the person got home. The worst invention ever is that of the cell phone. I refuse to own one. In fact I do not even know how to answer one much less make a call on one. There are times when you just gotta run away and hide from the world, the wife, the kids, etc. and just be with yourself. Re Bruce.... Screaming kids are not my probmem as almost all the movies I see are rated R or PG 17. HOWEVER my big thing is adults who talk to the movie screen while the movie is being run. DE |

Here's one for You DE. A little over a year ago, when I was volunteering at my college radio station, I was in the "phone-a-thon" room asnwering phones for our pledge drive. There's a mic there so we can talk on the air and update the public on the fund drive's progress. It was 2:00 AM and we were just about ready to sign off the air, when the on air person said to the audience he couldn't find the sign off cart. Without thinking, I stared at the radio and blurted out "It's on the minidisc." To our surprise, the voice asked which one? After 12+ hours in that small room, even the lambest of humor was enought to lighten the mood. |

My dad installed computer networking and when he was at a local air force base he was putting in a wall plate and then he attempted to cut out the holw the saw wouldnt cut properly so he used a utillity knife and nibbled at it and finally discovered the walls are insulated with 1/2 inch led all the way around. he brought the chunk home and its about 12" x 12" and 1/2" thick and man its heavey!!!!!! |

..I like the idea of radio-resistant - rooms.. if some one even has an EMERGENCY and needs to use a cell-phone or other communication needs...walking outside is not that hard to do...you had to WALK in... just as easy to walk OUT......(lol)...BIG FOOT |

...there are many areas here in north ALABAMA that a cell phone will NOT work, even near metro HUNTSVILLE and Decatur area, but the companies will NOT put up towers to eliminate the "blind spots", the towers are up, but with no antennas at the top and no BOXES at the base...just waiting and rusting away for the cell phone companies to actually DO something....BIG FOOT |

We use 5/16" plate steel here at the mountain. Although it is heavy, it is not very high tech and relatively easy to find and cheap to purchase. It stops everything including EMP (which is why it is used) from coming in. Our entire complex is built out of it. I've seen the lead encased rooms, but I believe that it is used more for radiation protection over radio wave protection. Although I'm sure it would work just as well, it would be much more expensive and way the heck heavier than plate steel. DAN |

True that walking in and out is easy, but if you are attending to someone who's suffering a medical problem, the 911 operator will often ask for assments on the person's conditon or give instructions. Having someone outside trying to relay instructions to another inside during this could make things interesting. Though I'm sure RF resistant movie theaters and restaraunts would've planned for this and would have a dedicated phone system installed for emergencies only. |
