Put a drop of light oil on the fan berings. You can run 23JS6 tubes in that Skipper without changing sockets. You do have to change the filament transformer to a 3 amp at 24 volts. |

The fan motor is probably available as a generic replacement. You might have to cut the shaft short, but typical HVAC/refrigeration supply houses call this a 'foundation' motor, and they are used inside commercial refrigeration stuff. You have to match the voltage (120ac), shaft diameter and direction. Taking the old motor with you, and trying your old fan blade on the shaft of the new motor might be wise. Don't have a catalog or cross-reference for these motors, but this is the one source I know about. The bushing sleeves on this motor are a porous bronze that absorbs oil. There is a small felt 'doughnut' wrapped around the sleeve, under the end caps. A small hole in one side of each end cap is meant to allow adding oil to the felt. Odds are the fan would now be quiet if this had been done anytime in the last 25 years. It never hurts to try the oil first, but if it's just plain worn, try the Commercial HVAC supply. By the way, the small "telescoping" oil bottles these folks always have near the counter are the perfect oil for this kind of small motor. The extension tube makes hitting the small hole in the end cap a LOT easier than with a 3-in-1 or bicycle oil can. 73 |

Hey, that was cheap, eh? If you key it regularly,it never hurts to give the oil holes a little 'drink' a couple of times a year. The heat from the tubes will drive the oil off faster than a motor running somewhere cooler. 73, and say a little prayer before bed for long life and good health to those 8950 tubes. No matter how long they last, it won't be long enough. 2600 |
