Around here, we call it "Galaxy Syndrome". If you've gotten three years' service without trouble, this one must have been built on a Wednesday, when everybody shows up for work sober. A sharp pair of eyes and soldering skills are probably what it needs. There are components that can fail, but failure of one or more solder connections on the circuit board is the odds-on favorite for the culprit. You didn't say if the receiver sounds as if it is leaving channel 19 while the counter is jumping, or if the channel 19 racket is still audible while the counter reads wrong. If the radio is jumping frequency, the counter has no choice but to show that. If you are STILL hearing CH 19 chatter WHILE IT READS WRONG, then the counter itself is suspect. If the RADIO really IS jumping frequency, and no soldering defects can be found, the next likeliest culprit is the 10.24 MHz crystal next to the PLL chip. For whatever reason, this crystal is likelier to fail than most. The factory must have been bought them from the low bidder. Sometimes reheating the solder connections on this crystal will make it feel better for a day or two, then it goes psycho again. This is a hazard of re-doing solder connections on the circuit board, making it seem better until it gets a few miles down the road. The most annoying side of "on-again, off-again" problems is the risk of making it "play 'possum" for a while before resuming its old (bad) habits. If your tech doesn't nail it the first try, don't be too quick to cuss him for it. 73 |

yup 2600 is right the crystal and or the voltage regulator could be the problem. check the curcuit boards for crack also. one drop can do serious damage if it has ever happened! while your in there make sure the plugs are seated well on the freq counter. later |
