I bought me an 02 Wrangler today! Whooohoo.But the drive home from the lot was miserable with out my 99 squakin.Any ideas as to where mount it?It has a center console so thats out,Ac so theres no room under the dash,the glove box is too small and I cant get exited with drilling holes in my new top just yet.
I was thinkin of mounting the antenna off of the spare tire somehow any other ideas? thx. |

I have a TJ same as you what i did was make a custom bracket that comes through the center hole of the spare wheel (steel rim) and i mounted my radio on the top dashboard in the center in that little dip i just took the rubber piece out and put the bracket there,,(RCI2950DX, Yaesu FT100D, Icoom V8000) not all at the same time of course but that spot holds the radio fine if i get a chance i will try to take a picture |

I looked at that spot.I guess not hard enough though.I currantly have a 148 mounted above the passengers feet for mockup purposes only.It will work there but is a bit of a stretch to reach.
Is there any holes to run coax?I have a hardtop and some belden coax with pl-259's soldered on already.thx |

I think that place on top of the dash will work ok.Did you remove it to install nuts behind it or did you just run some sheet metal screws into it? |

Ye gadd guys, a hole in the dash of his brand new vehicle?????
Ok here is what I would do. I would look for a screw or small bolt beneith the dash where no one looks unless you stand on your head. Use the bolts and nuts already there to attach the mounting bracket and if I did have to drill a hole at least it would be where no none sees it.
Oh and while I am typing, a word of warning. These new vehicles use a great deal of computer chips and such. Be careful where you locate your antenna and where you run your power wires to the radio. Better yet contact the service rep and find out if they have a statement for that particular vehicle as to how and where to run the power wires and antenna placement.

yes i found it hard to drill in a new car thats why i took the rubber pad off as when you remove this you can put the pad there and noone will see the holes when you remove the radio 
as for under the dash?? YIKERS!!!! go look under the dash of a Jeep Wrangler TJ
NO ROOM
and the coax will route from the passenger side up the side of the dash (LOOK NEAR THE END OF DASH NEAR THE DOOR) and route it up that and the coax will lay right across behind the windshield and on the drivers side you can do the same or run out under the 4WD shifter to the rubber firewall plug right to the battery which hides the power wires and near the right of the steering column is a single screw you can remove and install a mic clip or mount it to the side of the radio.
I hope this helps let me know i can try and answer a few more tips,,,,as you know there isnt much room for the radio under a dash so some self tapping screws maybe 3/4 inch in length work best |

Hey Copperfan,did you have to remove the whole dash to get to the backside of the change thingy in the center of the dash?I would like to put nuts behind it to help secure the bracket.
I tried Deadly eyes idea of mounting it under the dash,theres no room left for the passengers legs.....dang.Ain't no room on the Dr.side whatsoever. |

Re copperfan....
I have the same problem with no room for a radio. I drive a S10 and with that little storage ledge there is no space to mount an radio except perhaps on the hump (which I did not want to do). BUT I noted if I redrilled a hole I could mount it slightly to the left of the steering column inbetween the steering column and the emergency break. Perhaps it will fit there. |

there IS a alternative you can buy a center counsole that has a mount for a CB or a overhead counsole that goes from the windshield to the center rollbar? its made by Tuffy

I remember when a JEEP WAS A JEEP a mans vehicle and not some sugar frosted long range suv clone with the JEEP NAME,and even with the limmited space you could mount a radio any place,even under the seat.The best reception my cousin ever got on his mobile was at 300 feet,50 feet from top of cliff in calif. at a rally,beautiful view too,LOL.As for where to mount it in yours I haven't a clue. |

Tech181...I like the antenna mounts that guy makes/sells.I sent him an e-mail asking if it would support a 102 whip and the spring,he hasn't responded yet.It doesn't look like it would support the whip,guess Im back to a silverload or firstick.
The overhead console would be perfect except that a 148 ,99 ect is larger than the storage compartment,probly fit a 510 or possibly a 25 though.I'm thinking of mounting it on the
passenger side of the center console.Dangit! The Wrangler I traded in had plenty of room for my 99 AND my killer bee 250 AND my police scanner,all mounted under the dash. |

Hey Chris....
If your vehicle has the spare mounted on the back of the jeep you can have a welding shop bend a 3/8 in piece of steel into an L shape and drill two holes. One to mount the bracket to a lug on the spare tire mount and the other big enough to mount the steel whip.
I would suggest Stainless Steel but if you use regular steel all you have to do is a little sanding and a apply a couple of coats of spray paint in the can. Color of course to match the color of the vehicle.

The radio is gonna have to go on the passenger side just above the passengers shins.I spent 3 hours yesterday trying different places.
Cant go on the driver side because I cant get my foot on the brake or clutch pedal with it there.
Wont fit between the door and seat,just no room.
I took the dash apart,drilled holes on top like Copperfan did and mounted my bracket.Theres a heat sink on the back of the radio and it hits the windshield.
I guess my passengers will learn how to sit like an indian. |

Had that problem with the Delta Forcec all i did was mount it on the 2 rear most holes of the radio so that the heat sink sets forward off the windshield
right now i have a ICOM V8000 in place up there and it fits great. The FT100D was a great radio to have in there as it fit fine and it covered 160-10m/6m/2m/70cm but to use the ATAS 100 i couldnt open the tailgate and thought that a $1000.00 radio (including filters) and a $300.00 antenna whilst offroading was IMPRACTICAL.
Hope you get something set
you can get that radio to fit just study its mount |

It's been a heckofaday!I left the radio above the passengers feet for now.I ran the power wires to the battery,soldered,shrinkwrapped and taped the splices,even put an inline fuse at the battery.I ran the coax under the carpet and out the rear window rubber.
I have been trying for a week to contact the guy that makes the antenna mounts for Jeeps,He doesn't answer the phone(I left messages with my #) or e-mails(maybe he's on vacation or something).So I made my own antenna bracket using his idea(copyright infringment?)I got it all wired up and went to my local CB/butcher shop and bought a Wilson 6 ft fiberglass antenna.Since I was there I had them match it($5.00).
Then I went to the car wash(bad move,but I have no choice since I dont have water at my house).I pull up,dude comes out trying to sell me stuff I dont want ect,ect.I asked if I should remove the CB antenna and he says "no its ok".I procede into the place to pay my ticket,I sit down and low and behold her comes my Jeep down the tunnel with the broken antenna dangling!
Guess he tried to bend it over to get it out of the way,it broke about 6' from the bottom,it bent the stud too.
I had a fit! Went straight to the manager and he say's that I shoulda removed it that it not there fault!I didn't even let them finish washing it,I peeled out and left.
Went and bought another antenna,took it home replaced the stud and matched the antenna meself.
Seems to work ok,now I need to figure out where I'm gonna mount my linier. |

guys when i worked for the stpete radio shop a officer came in one morning and had just gone through the wash. His complant was his radio sounded " Weak" well we soon found the problem the 9in 800 meg and was held on by a wad of CHEWING GUM seems it broke off and the guy thought ... a cop car oh oh. Well we got a big laugh and i put another ant on. And i dont take my car through thoes things |

I hate taking my car to the wash too.But were havin a major drought here in the So.Cal desert.My well went dry 2 months ago and they want $22.per foot to redrill a new one.I'm at 300 ft now!They cant go down the old well because the casing isn't straight.....so they say.
I get to take showers at work.I have two 55 gallon drums of water in the back of my truck that I use for the swamp cooler and flushin toilets.
Man! you don't know how much water you use till you don't have any. |
