I've read where many people don't like the newer Cobra radios (cheap construction, faulty boards, etc.). Are new Unidens as good as the older Unidens, or are they suffering any of the same problems as the Cobras? I'm considering getting a new PC78XLTW. I welcome any opinions on this radio. |

Oops. I guess the 78 is not a SSB radio. My bad. Looks like the Grant is the SSB version. From what I've read around here, the Grant is well-respected. |

Dcobb, The older Cobra's were once made in the Philipene's and the boards were made by Uniden. From what I understand Cobra wanted Uniden to start using inferior parts which would have been cheaper for them to have built, but Uniden said NO! So Cobra decided to build their own boards using the cheaper parts, such as 1/16 watt resistors instead of 1/8 watt. I do beleive they went cheaper on a few other things too. Today's Uniden radios are still built in the Philipene's and are just as good as they always were. I myself have a PC78xl and love it. The only mods that I have done is a Turbo echo board with talkback. The control for the echo/reverb took place of the Delta tune and the talkback switch is utilized by the channel 9 button. The radio looks stock. It has a great sound...Eddie |

Any opinions out there about the older Grant XL models versus the newer Grant LT models? |

I took a look at some of my cobra 148's and 2 were made in the Philipenes and the other was made in Taiwan, I don't know how old that is but I would guess it pre-dates the Philippene models. Anyone know for sure? sandbagger #106 |

Well, I bought a new Uniden Grant LT tonight. It should be here in a few days. I'm excited to try it out. I've never used a SSB radio before, so that will be something fun and different. Thanks to those of you who offered advice on Magnums, Rangers, Unidens and such. I think this will fit the bill nicely for my usage. I'm not an real serious operator, so I couldn't justify the extra cash for the 10-meter radios, and I expect the Uniden to hold up well to my use and abuse. I'm surprised Uniden has discontinued the Grant. From what I've read here and on the CB newsgroup, the Grants are highly regarded (like the 148). Especially since the 148s went down hill, I'm surprised Uniden got out of the SSB business. Too bad. |

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense does it? A manufacturer had a product that sells and has been selling for decades and all of a sudden they decide to discontinue it. Its just like the Astatic mics. They couldn't have been losing out on sales. That was probably the most sought after desk mic there ever was. Now it is going to be a collectable. I saw a diamond eagle mic one time on ebay. That thing was nice. It was all gold with a diamond in the middle of the eagle on the back of the mic head. It was never used and still in the origional box. It sold for I think $350 I dont think I would have gotton rid of that. |

Question on my new Grant: My only complaint so far is speaker rattling. I don't even really have it turned up that much and the speaker is vibrating like crazy. It seems to be making the case vibrate. It doesn't sound good, that's for sure. I was considering popping it open and seeing if I could insert some spongy material between the speaker and the bottom case to soak up this vibration. Anybody have any suggestions here? DC |
