This might be a little off the radio subject but it does involve electronics. About 7 years ago I sold a guitar amp to a friend of mine and it sat in his basement ever since. I just went and bought it back off of him tonight. When I plugged it in ALL of the controls are extremely scratchy, even the 5 band EQ. It also is a tube driven amplifier and I was wondering if tubes go bad while just sitting. They heat up and it seems to work alright but the dirty controls have to go. What is the best way to take care of this. I've heard of some sort of contact cleaner or something that you can use to clean them up but what is it called and where can I get it? And would I have to remove the controls from the amp to do this or is it ok to just squirt it in there as good as I can? Thanks...Eddie |

Seen that many times. To answer your first question,no tubes don't go bad from just sitting unless they become damaged from rough handeling or excessive moisture causing corrosion around the pins leading to loss of the seal. You can get contact cleaner to clean your controls from Radio Shack or just use some WD-40 if it's a pot. Look on the back of the pot where the leads are attached . Most will have an opening you can squirt a little cleaner in with a small tube attached to the can . After you get a little cleaner inside,rotate the pot through its entire range a few times. If your lucky, this will quiet down your noisy pot. |

YUP! plain ole tuner cleaner should fix them up nicely  available at any "Rat Shack". You'll find a small square indented hole in each control, Just give em a little squirt using the attached tube on the can and work the controls a little bit to clean the contacts inside and lube em up should slide smoother! |

Thanks guy. Went and picked up a can of "tuner control" from the shack today. I am about to get started on it and see if this works. $8.00 for a little 4.5 oz can. It better be good stuff. |
