This seems to be a classic AM/SSB radio that set the standard by which new ones are compared. From various posts I've read, the older units are the ones to get. The new ones aren't as good.

Question: How can I identify the version of a 148GTL? If I see one for sale somewhere, how can I tell if it's one of the 'good' ones?

It will say "Malaysia" on the back side and will not have any surface mount components on the main board.

Hey DC, if the mic plug is on the front panel, (control panel) then its a sound tracker and its junk in my eyes. you want the 148 with the mic plug on the side, that would be a classic 148 gtl. If you want one look on ebay, theres always a half dozen or so on auction. Good luck, later

The old ones have the mic on the side. If you see one on ebay, hopefully it will show a pic of the tag on the back showing where it was made. You will want one that was made in the Philipinnes. Whatever you do, stay away from the soundtracker models...Eddie
