Police and intelligence services called yesterday for a ban on radio scanners, saying that they could put the Queen and ministers in danger.....

You can go look the whole story up but its scary. Could they start this and we be next??

bruce,

Well if the UK is not smart enough to use encrypted or digital communications when it comes to protecting their dignitaries, well....

It already has to some degree. A few states have banned scanners from automobiles. HOWEVER and fortuntely the Amateur Community has in general been exempt from said bans.

The common reason given is that the 2 meter repeaters are in the VHF and UHF territory. Also the ARES and RACES services use these higher frequencies as well as the HF frequencies.

Tech 181 and deadlyeyes

It IS the fault of the goverment if it wants to keep its comunications quite to encrip or scramble it. Sadly my concern is that OUR polititions will use this to try to firther control radio reception. As for scanner bands in cars it is ILLEAGAL to have a scanner in your car in florida but 3 things must apply
1) it must be mounted in the car ....handhelds are not illeagal
2) it must be tuned to police frequencys
3) the owner must not poses a ham radio licence

Only once have i ever heard of a arrest here in pinellas county and the man was a drug dealer who broke all 3 rules.

I do not beleve there is much support at least in local sheriff offices for " scanner laws " but the local law makers are another matter but like the c-phone laws you never know

Re Bruce....

Not being a big scanner person a question for you.

Does a handheld radio become desensitized if an effective external antenna is attached to it and or does it get serious intermod problems?

Just Curious.

good question a few years back i had a bearcat handheld 20 ch unit i hooked it to my 2 meter 5/8 and had no problems with it at all now our sheriff vhf antennas are line of site 1/2 mile from my house no intermod it work fine so my guess is most will do better on a outside antenna

My Yaesu VR-120 loses it completely when hooked to an outside antenna. Nothing but hash and intermod.

In all other countries rights are granted by their government,in the U.S.A.,rights are said to be inalienable and granted to us by our creator, therefore we must be diligent to guard against forfeiture or theft of those rights by gullible citisens and power hungery government.

Further more radio came into being after 1776,thus if we'd been diligent it could have become a right, like the 2nd amendment, but alas the gov. pushed hard to aquire all freqs. for it's self and granted priveledge to those whom it chose and when the gov. feels threatened it will recind any and all priveledges, whether or not you are a citisen or you've jumped through all their hoops to aquire this priviledge,it is irrelevant. And with this terrorism threat they could make tx/rx treason without their written and express consent, shades of the third reich.

I got a idea BIGBOB for FCC chairman!... Sadly in the early 1900's there were so many idiots on the air they gave the people in washington the chance to seze power and regulate the airwaves by 1919 the ham radio license was already being issued by the early 1930's the FCC and the present comucations act was law Not likely they are going to give it up not likely your going to see a license free airwaves in my lifetime.
