I've been running a Palomar 225 blue face for several years now and I am real happy with it.I think it's getting tired though. It only puts out 140 watts(used to do 180,if you believe the guys meter was correct ...who knows right).Several years ago I took it and a radio in and the tech removed/changed the ssb delay. Now I talk ssb alot and w/o the delay it "clips" when I talk. So I dont think its worth fixing due to its age and am thinking of buying a new linier to replace it.I want the new one to have the ssb delay.Should I buy/upgrade to say a 350 or 400 watt linier to replace it?Or should I just buy another 225? Should I get a hi-drive?I never really understood what that is anyway. I'm running a Galaxy 99,decient coax(not radio shack stuff) and a 102'antenna with a spring. With my curent setup I can talk all over town, heck I talked to a guy in Australia w/o the linier on. This is a mobil setup im my pickup. Whats everyones thoughts? thx |

I nice 3 pill would do fine like a texas star dx350 or an xforce 200. High drive takes a little higher dead keay but it is not neccessary. Get 1 watt out of the galaxy and "swing" the rest you will be loud and clear. |

In most cases the term "high drive" is just a selling ploy as the amp operates no differently than a "non high drive" unit. *Usually* an amp with (4) sd1446, mrf455, etc can be considered "HD", as well as (2) 2sc2290 or 2879 transistors. Typically you can run up to 500w peak in your mobile without much installation hassle. Just make sure you "feed" it well and antenna system can handle DOUBLE what you're running. For your 99 that would include a Texas Star 400, Boomer 400, KL500, XForce X80 and 200HD (a real HD). |

Well Cris, There's alot of amps on the market these days. And there's alot of dirty amps out there as well. I've always been a Texas Star fan. I run a Texas Star DX400hdv in my work truck with a RCI 2950. I've had that amp for about 7 years know and It's got alot of bucket mouthing on it. Never had a problem with it. It still walks the dog and kicks the cat. I just purchased another one from Copper to run it in my Chevy 4by4 with a Cobra 148gtl. Love those Texas Stars.............good luck.......73's... |

Well here we go with the different suggestions.. LOL!! Heres what id get if it were me. For the $$$ and more bang for the buck get a TX star DX 500. Its alot like the 667 but you dont have the driver that is in the 667. Ive also heard the palomar skipper 450 (the ones with the spiky looking heat sink wrapped all the way around the amp) is a great amp too if you run SSB alot.. |

Get with bruce maybe he can help you finding/building a power combiner, run two or three rf amps, really put a load on the electrical system. You'd probably need an alternator with same output as your engine.hmmmm. |

Bigbob Ha Ha Ha Combiners can be found in some rf catalogs but i dont remember seeing any as low as cb. Now my homemade 10 meter amp running class c puts out about 300 watts and in my car a 1979 caddy devill with a 440 motor i dont have any problems. To be honest i dont run it much on fm since even at 6 watts i can work the world and my radshack cb radio gets real upset since its antenna is only 4 foot away Also it draws about 40 amps and i have cooked one fuse block and had to find a motorola one from a old 120 watt micor well on the combiner if i see one ill let you know |
