Hello all, I have been lurking around this forum for a week or two and have been reading your opinions. I have been using a Cobra 25 LTD ST and a Gray 150 (for clarification). I have always felt a radio should not sound loud, Only clear. In any case, I have been experiencing problems and most of the shops have closed in the Charlotte/Statesville areas(NC). The ability to find people willing to work on equipment is getting hard. I just ordered a Galaxy DX 959 from cooper and am awaiting its arrival. According to what I have been reading, was this a mistake? I only deal with AM and almost no SSB. Is this a good radio? I look forward to reading your comments. Thanks, Doug

Doug,
I think all in all it is a decent radio. It has alot more options than your typical trucker cb. For the money you spend on it you accually get alot. Only about $40 more than a Cobra 29 or a Uniden 76 yet you get more. I wonder if diehard, 10 meter Galaxy guru's, like myself, were just expecting a tad bit more out of it being used to hearing the big brutes of the Galaxy line? Regardless, I dont think you made a mistake...Eddie

The DX 959 is a great radio.....when tuned correctly. Untuned it defineatley sounds subpar on the air. Volted up and/or "mega tuned" it sounds raspy and longevity is no more.
I am an avid advocate of clarity combined with loud audio. I kinda like it when people say "hey man, what are you talking on?".
If you need help you can email me.

Doug,

I use the DX 959 as my base both am and SSB. The reports I receive are GREAT. I am also am firm believer of Clear and Crisp with enough volume to get the job done.

Thanks for the comments guys. I was worried about the idea of throwing away perfectly good money. I had cooper do the peek and tune and I have just received it but have not had the time to install it. I have a family reunion this weekend so I probably will not get the opp until monday. Doug

p.s. I now am registered....Duh so I am me...

i had a 949 the am worked very well. the ssb is lacking. i too would use an external speaker because the stock one is of poor quality.
