Old is when the radio came on then you had to wait 30 min for it to stop drifting. Old is crystals as big as tin cans and you could have 1 ch in it at a time. Old is when you had to BUILD your radio. |

Ive still got my laf HE-15b that i bought in 1963 converted to 6 meters which it sat on for 35 years and i just finshed restoring it to back working on CB although it will never be used. Now guys when i was first licensed we took apart FT-243 crystals used borax and GROUND them till they were on the frequency we needed.... AND my first 2 meter radio was a ARC-3 WW2 aircraft AUTO-TUNNING radio weighted lots 30 tubes and one channel ... o a CARBON mike. and YES i have photos of it. but old is when you FLEW the planes that arc-3 was in! |

oldguy do you remember the days when we put a 1.5v A battery and either a 45,67.5 or 90 volt B battery in our 5 tube portable radio the one with the 1U4,3A5 ect and BIT.. when that B Battery went dead and we had to spend $4 to replace it! Then The STONER cb sets and the rushboxes ruled 11,10,6 and 2 meters and lets not forget the ARC-5's how many novice's had one with that dyomoter werring away ! 807's 1625's ruled the air and the 829B these wipper snapers talk about LINERS ! HA that old 829B YES SIR! We use to know on 2 meters when the tube was running right you could see the WHITE HOT GRID GLOWING THROUGH THE RED HOT PLATE ! Now talk about HOT recivers i can remember my amico 2 meter conveter ahead of my BC-348 which i had build a adaptor ( conveter ) to feed my ARC-5 Q5er 190-500 reciver on 262 khz using AUTOMOTIVE IF cans from a car am radio HOT HOT HOT!....and lets not forget that J-38! Thoes were the good old days! |

Old is when you try to plug a tube into a transistor socket using a magifier. Ancient is when you try to replace an SMD (Surface Mount Device)transistor with a tube. UFO is when it actually worked (Unidentified Fix by Old person). Young is when you test 9 volt batteries with your tounge. Slightly Older than Young is when you test 110VAC with your tounge Lightning is what happens when you test 100VAC with your tounge. 307 |

Old is using your first three initials, with your zip code, as your temp call sign until your CB license arrived, such as my user name on here.... Eventually we will answer this poor blokes question, what was it? |

OLD is when your 1st cb call was before your initials and zip and your 2nd after them. Hey Wipper Snaper why would anyone want to replace a good tube with a transistor anyway? And as for testing HV i have rules lines on my shop floor every 3 foot is 100 volts .... A Polish Volt Meter.... I'm Working on the OHM's scale . bruce |

Old is when you wanted to build your first radio with the help of the TV repair guy across the street, using plans from the Book Of Knowledge Encyclopedia, 1957 printing, but after he took a look at the plans, he just laughed and gave you a Hallicrafter HA-28 just to get you out of his hair. Dang I wish I still had that old thing.... |

Copperfan, its been a long time since I messed with a 139, the 135 was easy, one crystal would get you 23 more channels. However, if my memory serves me right, the 139 uses two sets of mixer crystals. Each crystal will get you 4 channels, or 50 Kc's, so to make it 40 channel, you would need a muti-position switch, and three crystals of the correct frequency. You did get some hellva answers to a simple question. These guys are too old to read, hahaha. scrapiron |

Copperfan, I had a Cobra 139 back in the 80's, had a Siltronix VFO on it. May want to consider this instead of adding all these crystals. You can find these on ebay once in a while or ask around someone might have one they want to sell. This worked well for me, just my thoughts!!! |

Youd be better off to get rid of that old 23 channel and get a 40 channel 139Xlr. They have the famous 858 PLL and you can get a boatload of channels out of that rig!:-) |

Ah yes, I still remember my first CB call sign "KII 2810", my second call sign was "KABQ 5190", then when it expired the FCC said you didn't need a license anymore. |
