I sent my AR Ranger 3500 100 watt to my tech to have a Variable pot installed for the Am side so i can dial down my carrier so i can run my Palomar 300A on high with out the worrys of the carrier.
i also had him try to get a 1 watt carrier out of it on SSB. In the process of trying to get the carrier out he retuned the radio in the process. After he did that i tooked the radio back home and it is now a DOG! It has almost NO swing on AM and SSB l9ike it did before he retuned it! Before i had him retune the radio it had all kinds of forward swing (im not going to say how much because that will cause a meter swing argument) and now it bascically has some but not as much as i wanted it to have when i got it! Now if i send it to him and tell him whats going on he will blow me off and say :its your meter" and i know DAMN well its not! its the radio NOT the meter!
Ok now is there a tech out there that has worked on these radios?

SCREWDRIVER TECHS NEED -NOT- REPLY!

How do you get a carrier out of it on SSB?

101, unbalancing the balanced modulator will do this. 95% of the time a small carrier like he had is because the 'balance control' pot has been incorrectly tuned. if his bm had been completely unbalanced, he would have had a 100-150w carrier on ssb.

rci2990, as for the techs work, it could be that he has done nothing wrong. if the radio had previously been in the hands of what you called a 'screwdrver tech', then the amc and alc adjustments were probably wideopen. the bandpass/coupling/low pass sections were probably incorrectly tuned also. if the tech you just took/sent it to tuned all this correctly (am at 100% mod, alc set correctly, and coils put back to proper form) then your radio may look like a "dog" when you are comparing your meter readings now to the past. it may be that if you want what you had before, that you -need- the 'screwdriver techs' to reply.

ss8541:

I know that you can cause a radio to put out a carrier by unbalancing the balanced modulator but I don't think this is what he was talking about (and you wouldn't normally do that). As a matter of fact that is how some of the low-level modulated rigs generated AM.

What rci2290 said is that he tried to get his tech to set the SSB output to 1 watt. I hope he wasn't serious. If he really thinks that there should be a carrier on SSB then it makes me wonder if he is justified in criticizing his tech.

101, I think 2990 said he wanted the tech to get the 1 watt carrier out of his SSB mode. I think he took the radio to the tech with a 1 watt carrier in his SB mode. I also think he said he wanted to add variable output for his AM mode as he wished to be able to key 1 watt into his amp while in the AM mode. Boy, this can get confusing, can't it.

I think 8541 is probably right on the mark in his conclusions. Hey 2990 if that old 3500 won't swing to 175 watts on SB, just send it down here to me. I can live with it.

If i cant get it to swing like it did before i had him work on it I WILL get rid of the radio! The carrier on SSB is the least of my worries i just want it to swing and talk as good as it did before i had him work on it thats all....

If you were that sure that you weren't going to get the response you wanted, why ask the question? From past posts I've read from you, it sounds like you are a loose cannon. I think what your problem is that you didnt get the answer to fix your problem. All the responses you got were talking about the 1 watt carrier on SSB, not to give possibilities on fixing your swing problem. The forum is for anybody to talk about anything they want. FORUM: An assebly for discussion of public affairs. Hence the name open forum...Eddie

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 3500 is NOT broke!!!
it was all entirely my fault.
I accidently left my radio with the split/program button IN. That left the radio TXing on 26.000 MHZ. DUH! Geezz! Now that i got it out of that mode it works better than before that my tech retuned it..
Nothing like a frustrated CBer... LOL
its all good now....

:-)

PS i still have that 1 watt carrier on SSB but no one seems to notice it. i mentioned it to my tech and he said not to worry about it unless it really starts to cause some problems..

I got a good LOL when you described me as a "loose Cannon"! I asked all my friends about that one and none of them describe as that! Maybe opinionated and outspoken and not afraid to tell it like it is but a loose cannon? NOO!!! Not even close!!! :-)

RCI2990,
I hope I didn't sound diminishing when I wrote that. We all go through the "I shouldn't have let him work on it, it will never be right again blues". I guess it just sounded like you were taking your frustration out on the forum members who are here to help you if we can. Well, glad to see your radio is working properly. Kinda makes you feel like a jackass when it is your own ignorance doesn't it. I cant tell you how many times I have left the pa button on or something like that and have accually taken the radio apart to try and diognose the problem. Oh well, you just gotta laugh...Eddie

No offensne taken. I just kinda though it was funny about the loose cannon part though. Yes i have had plenty of radio frustrations in al the time ive been on the radio. That 3500 is my all time fave SSB rig and i hated to have problems with it.

RCI 2290

I have allways sent my Ranger AR3500 rigs to RF Limited when they needed service but the enginer and designer of the radio no longer works for RF Limited so they dont offer repair any more. They do how ever recomend Bobs CB or Panther Electronics. These two guys are the only one's RF Limited authorise's the AR3500 to be service at this time.I can tell you from personal experince that Bobs CB knows the radio like no one else.He has serviced six other AR3500 radios that belong to freinds of mine and they all came back performing killer. The head guy at Panther is one of the most honest and helpfull real and I mean real radio techs I have ever come across,no B.S.!He has repaired countless radios of mine that I thought were complete basket case's.But when it comes to the 3500 I allways send them of to Bob.Traveling around the country I often stop into any cb shop I can to get a look around and check there inventory. It kinda tells me how well there doing and lets me see if they really know what there doing. In my opinion a good repair shop should allways have all the right test equiptment.Scope, tone generator, signal generator, fluke multi meter, bird watt meter, ect.Shere a guy could have all the right equiptment and be a radio trasher but it passes a big check in my eyes.Any how you can get a hold of Bob at bobscb.com and Panther at pather-electronics.com.I hear 307 at Copper is dam good as well but I have personaly never delt with him.
Well I hope this helps you out and I wish you the best of luck because it just cost way to dam much to keep having our radios hacked by people who should never even touch a hot iron let alone unscrew the case screw's. Dozer 414 Northern Cal.
