Now your talking? Well if you get into the right club with at least a general ticket..Other wise they treat you like a dumb vhf cber! newbie techs are a dime a dozen or so they say. I heard on the local greensboro repeater on the 2m the other week, a new ham with a tech lic. was i.d.ing and another guy came in and said we don't need no (no code newbies on this repeater) sounds just like QRZ.COM(not ham but spam radio) FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE-BANDEEEEEEEEEEEER |

Go to your local Radio Shack or Ham dealer and pick up a book called "Now you're talking". It is published by the ARRL and has all the info, including the test to help you get your technician license. It cost $19.95. www.qrz.com also has the entire test bank you can download and/or print, plus take practice test online. |

Don't listen to the bashing, I have NEVER heard on any of the repeaters in my area, slamming no-code techs. So don't let that stop you from getting your ticket. If you have any questions I'm sure alot of people on this board would be gald to give you a hand.(I for one)GOOD LUCK |

Okay, thanks everybody for your help.I know hearing the hams on the scanner isn't the same as actaully being on the radio but all the people I've heard up there have been really nice even to newbies.Surely it can't be any worse than any cb band.Seems to me that 4 letter words and junk talkin are all over any cb band. All I got in my cb is high and low channels and regular 40 and I still hear trash whenever I can cut through all the skip from Mexico. That and around here you'll pay out the rear end for a radio with side band. FREEBANDER,are you from North Carolina?I hear ham conversations frequently and I've never heard anything like you're talkin about over the repeaters around here. Not sayin it doesn't happen just sayin I've never heard it.Anyways, thanks for all the help guys. |

I've not ever heard anything like that (again not saying it doesn't happen,I just haven't heard it).I'm sure it happens I just don't think it really happens that much atleast in my area. Most of the activity I hear is on 147.270 though. I'm in ENC around the town of Goldsboro. Unit 168...thats me!:D I usually hang around on channel regular 28 or 2 and channel low 5. |

Gee Freebander you don't know me but yet I'm a liar. And if ham radio ticks you off that much why bother listening to it in first place? Don't scare other people away just because you don't like something. Why not just drop it! |

I have looked on some of the ham BB's and they do talk down some of the no-code trash on the bands now. One of the hams even posted a message that stated "I believe the FCC should require a IQ test as part of the new amateur lisense requirements" . Some of the other's objected because that would further reduce their numbers. Hams have a reputation of being a little snobbish and that goes back years, not just since the no-code rules. Even the members are shocked by the large numbers of hams who are giving up their tickets and not continueing as operators. I have listened on the amateur bands for years and for the most part, hams are pretty good guys. But you have a growing group of radicals that think they belong to an exclusive club that you have to RATE to be a member. If you don't use the proper and politically correct language , you won't get very far with them. |

Well surely it ain't any worse than switchin to channel 19 and and having a bunch of truck drivers act like mean *** cuz you aren't a truck driver. As far as the hams who are on their high horse about the no-coder's they'd better get over it because thats whats gonna replace them whether they like it or not.I still want my tech tickit and the fact that the government will know I got my ticket doesn't really change anything cuz they already got my SS# along with birthdate and everything on my drivers lisence. And the few bad apples on the ham bands is far fewer than the bad apples I've heard on the 11 meter band.I love CB but anything on the ham band isn't as bad as CB.Atleast on ham you won't hear the people down the road playin perverted music and a lot of other stupid junk.So as far as a few bad apples being snotty on the ham bands,I don't think it's worth being at eachother's throats about such a tiny little thing.(as compared with other bands that we know so well) |

409 it bugs me that most of these " snob" hams do little on the air contacts most can be seen posting bi..... about anyone who has a " lower" class of license than they do. Count them and take that number and devide it by 500,000 and you have a idea how small a group they realy are ... as for people leaving the hobbie look at the ( ave) age 54 now and 72 in 25 years look at the slient keys page it is growing at a alarming rate When the TECH class cought on in the 60's they didnt like me ... and some still dont and incentive licenseing killed growth DEAD . The ARRL is to blame they have thrown away many chances to streamline the testing without lowering standards and even got the code exam upgraded now to make the 5 WPM harder im a life member and have made my feelings known. |

Yea....some of the hams were very critical of the ARRL and their attitude about the hobby as it stands today. |
