Hello All! Been reading the forum for about a year now before actually registering to comment on things. Just feeling everything out and getting the local vibe on the CB scene. It's a pretty complicated world out there and many choices, especially when it comes to equipment. I guess it comes down to 'what works best for you', then go with it. But how do you know what works best if you don't have much experience with it? My situation involves used equipment. There's nothing wrong with the old stuff if you can find it. I have read some of the posts about amplifiers and am looking for a good one to run at my start up base station. I have spied a Galaxy 1000 and some Siltronics amps, but have also read some good posts on Maco 300's and Gray Fox's. I'm not looking to bore anymore holes in the upper atmosphere, but could use some good advice out there on a decent trouble-free amp. Thanks for the recommendations. xLAXX |

Where can I find 8950 tubes or 40KB6 tubes for a Galaxy 1000 (6 tube) or Siltronics (6 tube) amp? How much should I expect to pay for these tubes?? Are these good amps?? Taz, you're 14 years old, right?? Where did you get all your bling-bling to buy so much CB equipment? I'd love to have a job like that at your age. Later. TEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNN 4 |

xlaxx, if i were you and wanted a good amp id get one that runs transmitting tubes (3-500z's,811a,572b,3cx250b ect.ect ) instead of horizontal sweep tubes. they last many many times longer and will do a much better job for you.they will cost abit more but its well worth it in the long haul. its cheaper in the long run to buy one good quality piece of equipment than to end up buying 3 cheaper ones. "just my opinion" goodluck bullet |

Bruce, what's the replacement tube for the 8950, or do I have to go with the 8950 for the Siltronics amp? Are the 40KD6's pretty easy to find for the Galaxy 1000? Taz, if you're really 14, and are working for your old man, you must be mowing a lot of grass to afford CB stuff.... just razzin' you LOLOLOL. |

Hey Bullet/151, I'm kinda stuck already cause I have the Galaxy 1000 and the Siltronics amps. I purchased both along with a Silver Eagle mic all for about $200. I thought it was a pretty good deal. I guess the way to look at it is, hey if I find the tubes for the amps, I'll have a $600 amp?!?!...right. I just don't know how they'll work out? Are you familiar with either amp?? Are they well built or cheapo's?? I was told the Galaxy will do 800W dead key? Thanks |

Bruce, Thanks for the reply! Sorry for being ignorant but can you run other tubes in the Galaxy 1000 or Siltronics amps or do you have to run stock tubes? Do you have recommendations on proper tubes to run these bad boys???? I guess I just want to get the most bang for my buck is all....Thanks again! |

xlaxx: Do the amps have tubes, if so have you checked them, they may not be bad, lots of other things can go wrong. You can get the new 40KD6's for around 30 bucks each. How many tubes does the siltronix take, there is no sub for the 8950 tube, without rewiring or replacing the sockets, that I know of. Its my opinion, the siltronix is probably the best of the two. I've just owned a couple Galaxy's, and both were problems, very temperamental. They are kinda a hybrid, if you notice, it doesn't have all the good stuff in the bottom like the other tube amps, not filtered very well, and big bad bleeders. They did show some impressive watts. |

I had a 800 and a 1KW.. didnt care for them. Quality wasnt all that great. LOL the amps hardley weight an ounce and when you look at the guts on the underside they hardley have anything in them!!! A good solid built quality amp usually weighs a freaking ton not a mere few pounds! LOL |

ATTENTION SCRAPIRON or BRUCE: Sorry to bring this topic back up but do you all know if the 2057 tube can replace the 8950 tube? I had heard that the 2057 was an industrial replacement for the 8950???? Thanks xlaxx |

xlaxx, the 2057 and 8950 are interchangeable. The 2057 is good for a few more watts, and is larger. In some macos, they would be mixed sometimes, 2057 for drivers and 8950s for finals. In some of the amps, like the Maco 300 that used 2 driving 5, there is not enough room for 5-2057s, they would touch or almost touch and run hot. They were very durable tubes, most of them thats still around are over 20 years old. I know of some thats been in use for over 20 years. |

SCARPIRON- Thanks for the info.!!! You've been really helpful! Do you have an email address? I looked at your profile and there's nothing there??? Anyway, I think I can get some of those 2057's for around $70... a little steep but right now this Siltronix amp is doing 100W Dk swings to 650W on 8950's that are about 65%. The amp is really heavy, good quality. Somebody's been in it because it looks like a 2 driving 4 but one of the drivers has been disconnected at the top. So basically it's a 1 driving 4. We've been tinkering with it and blew a resistor 1250 ohm(?). I just want the thing to work! The Galaxy 1000 has 1 driving 4 40KD6's I just seated the tubes for about 48 hrs. It's a low driving amp 2-8W DK front door. From what I know about it, it suppose to 800W DK swing 1200. Any recommendations? Thanks again! |

find an old DA Phantom. I know a guy who has been running the same tubes for at least 10 years, daily, doing about 700-800w AM. |
