A miniature 3 or 4 element beam, complete with directional rotator box and mount, for a vehicle???????? Just thought I would ask and see if the possibility of one being created is feasable. 73's barakuda318 |

Don't know about using on the go but me and a buddy of mine had a three element maco we used to mount on the gooseneck ball in my truck on a 10ft pole for talking skip at hunting camp. If you got a short enough pole and guyed it to all 4 corners of the bed it just may work. |

If anyone ever wondered how far 5 watts can go read the following Another record contact was established a couple of weeks ago - 4.7 Billion miles to Pioneer 10; now twice the distance from the Sun that Pluto is! The return telemetry arrived 22 hours later. Another attempt will be made a year from now when Pioneer 10 will be 130,000,000 miles further out. !!!!!!! THATS 900,000,000 MILES PER WATT !!!!!! bruce |

Yes, But let's also consider the following Givens: A: It doesn't have to contend with all the competition there is here on Earth. AKA/CB'ers that feel they must use a killowat to talk to the guy in the next truck across the damn parking lot in a truckstop. And B: It doesn't have to contend with every half Jackass radio man in a truckstop calling himself a CB radio shop either. (You modulation clipping Golden Screwdriver award winners know who you are) Years ago 5 watts was far enough. But now??? |

Thats what I say all the time. watts or 5000 most of the time it depends on conditions. I've seen times I could talk across the country on 15 watts and others I can't get across the county with 1000. |

I have made small portable beams for 30 yrs all made to order. I can make them any size you want. My fav set is a 4 ele that I use when the DX is rolling here in Ohio. I live in a valley and I hop in the Dodge Caravan and drive about 5 miles to the top of the tallest hill here. I have permission from the people that own it. I get lots of people that stop by when they see the beams up on a 15 foot pole. I mounted a tripod on a piece of plywood then i drive the van on the wood to keep the tripod with the antenna from blowing over, run the pole with the antenna up ,coax in the window and talk away. I can reach out the window to turn the antenna around, I call it using the arm strong method. When down in the valley I cant hear,or talk to those weak ones ,but up on the hill they are s9. If anyone wants plans pls contact me |

The big problem on cb is power it is not the answer we all know thoes who have it tend to use itand alot of these users dont care if it squishes the little guy... yes i see this on the ham bands 20 meters is a joke.... but the fact is very long ranges can be done it is too bad that there was no " experimental band" ... yea i know part 15 but it restricts antennas too... to bad. CB because of its non hobbie nature no provision was built in for the experimenter REALY too bad some of these old RC channles would have been a good start... Now right now im playing with a 2 inch square transciver called a pixy it runs 80 mil ( .08 watts) a toy but qrp is fun and does take some skill. My best contact so far 1/2 watt fla to calafornia on 10 meters and on 6 meters 30 mil to south america on SSB. As for the space craft the RTG batteries which are now almost 30 years old will go bad in another 20 years or so when i worked at the factory that built them they were rated for 25 years at 100% relibilty.... where is that bunny? |

Eberytime a CB Question is ask BRUCE turns it tover into a "ham" question. Maybe we should have an area for "ham" questions. CB is CB and ham is ham and i hope never the twain shall meet. Lets try it that way and see how it works!!! |

I kinda like Bruces take on things. Besides his ham experience is handy for antenna and other technical stuff. Just cause he uses a different point of view should not preclude him using his knowledge and experience for us 11 meter folks. He uses the band too. |

I can talk skip when ever I want just with the radio. Except for channel 6. But I can usally get out all over town with my melaka and imax2000 really well. I like to just run the radio except when somone is trying to step on me, just flip my klv-550 on 3/4 and talk to my buddy like nothing ever happened. |

bruce is right. You can only talk about so much with the regular 40 channels. After a while things get well, boring! I enjoy reading and talking radio with Bruce. The guy comes up with some very interesting topics!!!!!!! |

Bullseye... Thanks you seem to get what im doing. As for "HAM" i have used all radio bands from 10 khz to 96 GHZ either in the engineering labs ive worked in over the last 35 years or on my own as a ham. Like i said my world is much wider than 40 channles and i want others to expand their world too. Curently im seting up for the 1750 meter band on the low side a 50 foot vertical at the end of the lot and 440 ( 3/4 meter ) on the high end with 17, 10, 6 and 2 as my primary bands... im space limited so in my car right now is a dypole that will be loaded to cover thoes bands ... the MFJ vertical is just too narrow. If anyone wants to try and hear me im on ch 20 with a old friend at 6:30 am EST every weekday we have been doing this for the last 20 years i got a old rad-shack cb set sometimes i toss in the midland 4 watts does just fine to a 7 foot 10 meter wip useing a antenna tunner. bruce |

Again I didnt mean to be offencive to Bruce. He gives valueable info . He seems to be a very knowlegable person. Regular 40ch? I can go anywhere from DC to Daylight. I can talk and send rtty packet fm am ssb and anyother mode I wish but with all the Elmers (hams that think they know it all ) I gave it up to come back where I got my start CB. Bruce I didnt mean it as some have taken it. But these pages are for cb I recomenf that we have a Ham room for all those who want it. |

I personally like to see Bruce's comments myself. He's a very smart person that know his stuff about radios.Wasahambutgaveitup, why did you give up ham?I don't see why people get so p***ed off about ham!!!CB radio is great,I love it,but you have to admit hearing some guy runnin his mouth 1000 miles away from you runnin a gazzilion watts keyin over you and your buddy thats 5 miles from you gets on my nerves to no end!!!Especialy when he talks in a straight line for 3-5 minutes at a time!!!!!So please don't be bashin a type of radio where the people are nice, full of knowledge, and the radio is plenty of fun.I like CB because it's fun,I've met people up there that I talk to and I've met some of them.Thats why I like CB.But if I get the chance to get into ham,I'm goin for it.If you wanna stay down on the 27mgh with BIG BUBBA runnin 900,000 watts keyin over your whole hometown,go ahead but I'll go up to ham where I won't be pullin my hair out.Good DXing and have a nice day. *Unit 168 "Timberwolf"* Eastern North Carolina |

Slow down folks! We are enthusiastic about radio stuff here. We love to talk and even learn a little. (Yes ARRL handbook sounds old) However, I've done some neat things on the radio lately! All the posts offer something to the forum. It's a great one. Take Care, Znut |

Not to take nothing away from our forurm here, but in all honesty I have Bruce's e-mail under a special section in my e-mail account, It is in a folder marked Need to know now?..If there were something I wanted to know and didn't want to wait to log on and see if it had been posted and then log on again in an hour or two to see if anyone had taking the time to answer my post, I would write to Bruce direct. I have never meet the man but just reading his post shows he not like many of the other hams I have encounter'd in real life. He takes time to explain why and how thing work the way they do in laymens terms. And to me this is a value to this community and I welcome any comments or opinion he has, not saying we all have to agree with anyone persons opinions, Just that there more then one way to look at things in life.....Hmmm...guess thats just my opinion...Thanks Bruce for being a valueable addition to our community! ....OHIOBIKER TransAmerica_5275 Southern OHIO |

To respond to the original question...yes. All you would have to do is either take 2 shortened antennas like a couple of 3 foot Wilson silver loads, get some measurments off of a home brew site for making yagis and voila, you have a small 11 meter yagi small enough to fit on top of a van. You could proably get away with even a couple of Hustler resonators and make it even smaller. the only problem you will run into is wattage. You would only be able to run 3-500 watts through it, but oh man the gain!!!! Phineas |

From what i have read of bruces replies and posts he is into the hobby pretty seriously but doesnt take it to the point of overseriousness like a lot of hams i know. Some of these guys i know around were i live are so serious about it they will not talk to anyone even in public that is not a ham! |
