A power mic does add modulation right?Or does it just make the audio louder by itself. |

both sometimes in a poorly designed radio it can do both other times mike gain is not a problem |

a power mic just increases the audio going into the radio. if the amc is still intact, it will not and can not increase peak modulation since the amc is keeping mod at a preset level. with the amc intact, the power mic will give a small compression type effect. the strong peaks will be reduced, while the weaker dips will be raised. the overall average modualtion will be raised, meaning that the overall average power output will be rasied. but peak mod% and peak power output will stay the same. same goes for ssb. |

forgot to add, the only stupid question is the one not asked, and also that the compression from a power mic is not as effective as a speech processor. on paper there should be no noticeable difference on the rxing end from the "punch" of a stock mic and a power mic. in the real world there is a noticeable difference. some is due to audio response, and some is due to the higher audio level input from the power mic. i kind of hate to post this as right now i'm picturing a ton of power mics being jacked wide open in tomorrow. keep in mind there is too much of a good thing. |

The radio will still only put out as much modulation as the mod circuit will allow. Power mics will boost incoming audio, which in turn sounds louder on the other end. But you are still pretty much limited to the radios modulation circuitry, any more and the result is distortion and splatter. Steve Tech181 Tech181@copperelectronics.com |

Power mikes can help out radios in the low modulation (audio) category. A good example is a Supertar 121. They are notoriously low in modulation, even with limiter clipped. Most of the time a power mike (some) enhance the voice reproduction....makes you sould crisper. Keep in mind to just open the volume of the mike so it does that, not run it full tilt. |

anything over 100% is distortion, you take out the limiter and with a good powermic there goes the distortion! |

Well,I like a loud radio...but I want a CLEAR radio as well.Thats what I was askin about the modulation.Thanks. |

the radio will distort only if the NEGITIVE peak reaches 100 % |

BOTH ON SOME, A POWER MIKE CAN MAKE YOUR MODULATION DISTORTED AND I SEE THAT AS A PROBLEM WITH MOST CB OPERATORS. THE (LOUD AND PROUD) SOUND ISN'T ANY GOOD IF YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING. A CLEAN CLEAR MODULATION IS BETTER AND WITH A HIGH NOISE LEVEL IT WILL HELP YOU BE UNDERSTOOD. KG4RYT |
