I see that alot of people think highly of there vr9000's.I can't say the same for mine though. The first one I purchased fedback through my external speaker with the stock mike so bad that I could'nt use it solved that problem with an astatic mike. The worst thing about the radio is the receive capability it just sucks there is so much noise you can't make out anything over 3 miles this radio really needs a mike gain and an rf gain.I finally gave up on the radio and got a Ranger 6300 problem solved. |

I had to aline the receive on mine and I put a mic gain in it.used the swr cal knob for the mic gain and it works great .I do not use the swr meter on the radio so no loss was felt. |

Man, I hear ya, Bronco! Well, you know the old saying, you get what you pay for! As I am getting back into it, I'm learning a little about when to buy cheap and when to go on and give the bucks and get bodacious! Hard part is, you have to spend more in the long run, but, as they say, "Live and learn". I got a Galaxy DX959. Good radio for the price, but, again, you get what you pay for. An RCI 2950DX would have been a much better choice for the $50.00 more, plus 11 meter modding. What I really want to get my grubby mitts on is a President Lincoln! Oh well, that's what happens when we don't take time to fully educate ourselves before buying. I acted with too little information under my belt and just went with what seemed to be the most for the dollar. I thought the 959 would be as modable as the 10 meter models, and I'd save some green stamps(how long since you heard that term?)going with it. I also wanted the large meter that comes on the Galaxies as I have always been aggravated with the puny meters on most radios. Well, "dingus" me didn't know that the 11 meter models are a totally different animal when it comes to how the PLL works. Safer bet to spend a few more buckeroos at the start, and be more satisfied, plus save money in the long run. What I really wish I'd done was to spend some time on this board before buying the first time! I guess the lesson is: Don't go nuts with the moolah but don't go cheapie-weapie either! Plus, take more time to get educated! |

This is a good subject. When listening to 10 peoples opinions on an item I don't think I have ever heard all 10 people say they liked it. If 9 people love it there will always be 1 guy who says it sucks. If 9 people hate it 1 guy will think it's great. Is this some strange rule of the universe? |

The 9000 is a great little radio, as with any new radio on the market it will have its bugs. Look at Galaxy I have yet to see one come out of the box with zero problems, most of them are minor but still goes to show. It is mass production not one radio is totally free from the bugs, that is why we have techs. Alignments are never to be trusted from the factory as they have a standard set that they put on each radio to get it within specs and get it out of the factory. To me there is no one ultimate radio unless it has 500 watts of power onboard and 300% modulation and is crystal clear. I just tell people to get the radio they can afford and has ALL the options they need. When you get a radio that is cheaper and only has some of your options and start having it built to your specs you may as well spend a little more and get what you want as you will end up having more money in a cheaper radio after the changes. |

I agree a little tweaking to any new radio can't hurt anything but when is enough? First problem was mic gain is wide open on these radios you cant get a stock mike anywhere near the radio.second problem was the receiving,I had the receieve aligned by a pro and it just made it noisier.swr was 1.5 new coax new antenna new brackets good ground what can i say I hooked a 6300 ranger up to the same system and the difference you can't even compare.I bought the voyage because it said they used the 88 board well if they did the must have left the rest of the galaxy parts out.I spent 100 dollars more and have a great radio now.If I put another 100 into the voyage would I even come close? I was'nt willing to find out.Like granny said you get what you pay for. |

i done roger beep mod, clarifier mod, speech prossecor, regulator upgrades, the npc-rc mod,no super duper tunes, will swing 50watts,recieve is good, disabled the talk back, put in a browning eagle squal.and i use a astatic 575-m6 mic.but as far as i am concerned it is a lie this radio does not have the 3600 14b it has 3600 14c,so it is not the exact board as a galaxy 88 like everyone thinks and radio shops say.just a way to get you to buy it. |
