Has anyone heard of this mod> What you do is as follows

clip r238 on one side then add a 1n4001 to cut side of r238 band toward board solder in place.

It is supposed to allow you to turn down deadkey and when you talk allows the radio to swing to max.

the 1n4001 is a diode that can be found at any radio shack. the mod will allow you to turn the dead key as low as you want and still swing the full wattage of the radio.

The 1n4001 is a ruggid silcon diode if i remember it is rated at 100v piv and 1 amp. As a bias diode it is probley foward biased which would allow a .7 volt higher bias point allowing the the control a wider range than if it ( the transistor ) had been tied to ground ...... ive seen this done although im sumising from what you are saying this is how it is being used. Jpatt24 is correct try rad-shack

Is this in anyway hard on the radio?

So all I do is clip r238 and solder a 1n4001 in place?

ok, well

i went to a place here locally and they found the part but they cross-referenced it to another item

NTE-116

Made by NTL Electronics.

On the package it says

Prv - 600V Max Ifsm - 30A

If - 1A Max Vf- 11.v @ 1A

It says it replaces the ECG116, GE-504A and the SK3313

will it work? he said the company that made the other part 1N4001 went out of business and these guys took over.

First of all, R-238 will be right infront of the AM high power VR, one leg will be in the air. Clip that leg directly in the middle. Place the 1N4001 Diode with the BANDED side toward the board, if you don't, you will have no power at all. Once you have, check this out and see that it works, set your dead key from 2-4 watts so you won't be too hard on the parts. Or add a variable power so you can adjust it to your liking at any time! This modification can be done to the Melaka and any other Galaxy DX radio with the EPT3600 board. (exmples: DX33-99!)

If you cut the mod limiter (R249), it will probably swing to 18-25 PEP after an alignment, if you just turn the modulation adjustment all the way up, it'll swing about 15-18 watts PEP. These figures may vary depending on your meters though. The last Melaka I had was clipped and did about 24 watts PEP... I tested it on a 300 watt MFJ dummy load, 27.2150 Mhz, on three sets of meters... the average was 24 watts!

I think Radiodude had to add another final transistor to obtain 50 watts... probably added 13.8 volts to the middle test point on the mirror board too! This mod is rather easy too... there is already a place to add another final, just find the support parts and you can do it! You can use a 2SC1969 or 2SC2312 for the second final.

taz leave the resistor and add the diode in line with it banded end toward the board works pretty well on my rci2950,3300hp and dx99
good luck

Put it between the two snipped ends. And that was an audiooooo, not a whistle, I never whistle into my radios! They give you false readings, just because it shows you 25 watts with a whistle, doesn't mean you are doing 25 watts when you talk!

Set your carrier to 2-4 watts, wherever you like it best in that range... the klv550 can handle it easy! You could add a 500k ohm pot on the back of your radio and solder it in place of your AM carrier adjustment... then you can set it to 4 watts barefoot, then 1-3 watts with your linear on!
