Hello. I was wanting to instal my fiberglass 4' whip on my hood, like how the am/fm car radios are, but of course on the other side. My question is, how will i know that my swr will be low enough BEFORE I drill the holes? I would hate to drill holes in my vehicle and then have to move the location because it isnt working out. Thank you guys.

Brent.... you can't know for sure, but I'd say chances are you will get roughly the same SWR with it mounted to the chassis as you would with a lip mount or maybe even a mag mount in roughly the same position on the vehicle. If the antenna has an adjustable tip, you should have no problem. If you already have a AM/FM whip, then you could possibly remove it, install the antenna there and try it, then you'll get a pretty good idea. Just my opinion though, I wouldn't put a fiberglass whip in a body mount. If it ever hangs on something, you might put a dent in the panel, unless the whip is extremely flexible. |

Magnet mount a no-go? You may give your antenna some direction with mounting it on the edge of a ground plane like your hood. This will cause somewhat of a directional apsect to your antenna's radiating properties towards the passenger side of the vehicle. It will still work but your absolute best place is the middle of the roof. No holes, BUT coax running across the roof.
