Newbie Needs Help From CB Experts Here! PLEASE READ!

Hello everyone!

I am in the process of negotiating a purchase of a CB base station from a member of a well known newsgroup, and I need HELP in ascertaining whether this unit is LEGAL! I don't want to prchase a unit that will ultimately land me a hefty fine with the FCC!

The unit is known as a "M6," and here is the description from the aforementioned member's homepage:

ººººººººººº

This radio IS better than a cobra 2000 ! Real wood on the sides, black grey & alum. front & woodgrain metal top. 40 Ch. Freq. aligned now. Some used units available. THE Classic! Price is  $350 & shipping NOS !

ººººººººººº
I realize that I'm only a faceless NEWBIE to you veterans here, but I really need your HELP!

If you can post your opinion, or e-mail me DIRECTLY (doppelgangerworld@webtv.net), I would appreciate it!

Hope you CB experts can lend a "helping hand" to a NEWBIE who wants to get into the fun world of CBs and CBing!

I will be extremely grateful to all those who respond!

Spacecadet-

Do you know something beyond this guys name? Seems like a pretty straight forward question.

Doppelganger-

Galaxy and Ranger make legal 40 channel bases. You might want to check into them.

Spacecaddet:

I am certainly insulted by your outward hostility towards me!

I was alerted to this fine forum by another CB expert (from the aforementioned newsgroup) who said this would be a GREAT place to gather unbiased opinions on my dilemma as well as other CB related issues!

I merely posted my e-mail address in the event a member would rather contact me via e-mail as opposed to posting!

I'm not sure what your agenda is, but is this how you welcome all your new members?

Tech181:

As your records will indicate, I just joined the forum as a member yesterday evening! I'm just a "newbie" looking for help on a pending purchase I'm contemplating. I'd also like to get more involved and learn as much as I can about this fun hobby.

I haven't done anything wrong. If asking a question about a specific product or leaving my e-mail visable is wrong, I apologize.

Phoneman:

Many thanks for your recommendations on CB base stations.

Are you insinuating that the "M6" is illegal? Can you please be specific as to the underlying reasons? I'd like to be able to explain the reasons to the individual who is trying to sell me this unit with facts and not my fiction. Many thanks in advance for your help!

For those wondering what my moniker means, I decided to post the definition.

I hope my stay here at this forum will be a fruitful one, and I hope the veterans will help out a "newbie" such as myself as I enter the fun world of CBing!

Any opinions on the "M6" and it's legaity would be sincerely welcomed.

(noun) *1 : a ghostly counterpart of a living person 2 a : alter ego b : a living person who has the same name as or who closely resembles another living person

According to German folklore, all humans, birds, and beasts have a spirit double, invisible but identical to the living individual. Such creatures were perceived as being distinct from ghosts (which appear only after death), and sometimes they were described as the spiritual opposite or negative of their human counterparts.

The key words.....
"will do 12-13w", Capable of channels ...."
All meaning it is stock and legal but can be tuned or expanded beyond legal limits.
If you are a collector, then maybe it's not a bad deal. If you want a CB base for everyday use, I think you may want to look at the bases mentioned above.
I don't think the FCC brigade will come down on you with the wrath of evil for operating a few watts over written limits or a few channels outside of the regular 40.....unless you're a licensed ham.

No hostility intended look at your post and think about the FCC and see what they would do to anyone who they were able to track this way, I still think that the true meaning is "two faced'

Doppleganger, If you're worried about being legal, get you a new radio for close or less than the price of one that old. I don't believe the FCC will shoot you for having it, but talking beyond the 40 channels and/or above the legal 4 watts AM/12 watss SSB will indeed be "illegal". As said above, a few watts higher won't bring satan to take you to hell in shackles, but you were asking about staying legal. Do you know this person? Be careful of a what you get over the internet unless you purchase from Copper.

John Glen fcc, quoted 1999: "We will no longer put any funds towards the policing of the cb band"

Therefor noone' going to come and knock on your door unless they volenteer, but its still unlikely

Warlock and Alsworld:

Many thanks for taking the time to reply! From what I'm reading, you're message to me is that while this unit may not be "illegal per se," it can be easily modified to be out of FCC compliance. Perhaps your advice to me is basically to stay with a well-known brand that is FCC compliant. I can live with that. No, I don't "know" this individual who's trying to sell me this unit. He replied to a post I had placed on a CB newsgroup. It appears my "safest" bet is to only deal with authorized CB base station dealers, or at the minimum, sites like this or eBay.

Taz:

"Playing a trick?" What do I have to gain? I'm "green as grass" when it comes to the CB world, and this site was recommended to me as a place to get well-thought out opinions and advice. I can assure you I'm indeed a "rookie" with CBs! That's why I registered in this fine forum!

Spacecadet:

Do you seriously think Im a "double-agent" working with or for the FCC? I think you've been watching too many "Get Smart" reruns on TV! That's the most ludicrous thing that's ever been intimated about me!

Are you always this leary of any newcomer that comes into your forum asking about the legality of a specific product?

If you persist with this unfounded attitude towards me, I guess I'll have to say you've chosen your moniker wisely!

Doppelganger,
I've only been back in radio a few months since a hiatus awhile back. There is an incredible amount of knowledge on this site. When I first jumped into CB radio, I bought a "CB" from my next door neighbor who needed some cash. I wondered if I was getting screwed but we'd been neighbors for years. He taught me about SWR's and the basics of operating the radio. Well, what I got was a 10 meter HAM radio modified for the CB frequencies called "11" meters. Throws a few more watts on AM but it's no amp for sure. Turns out it's a pretty sought after radio that I will never sell. Turns out all those "extra" channels I got (i.e. 10 meter band) have been a blast to listen to hearing people from all over the world. It's inspired me to get my HAM ticket so I can talk to them, although I don't dare talk on those amatuer bands. I dig the CB and will continue to talk CB, but would like to expand as well. It's all good. Is my radio "illegal"? Probably yes. However, it's how you use it that matters. I respect the HAM band and won't talk on it until I'm legal. No reason to step on their toes. That's my perspective. I'm considering getting an amp for 11 meters. Illegal? Sure as hell. But... if it cause any TVI with my neighbors I won't use it. Why? It's the right thing to do. Generally speaking, pissing off the world via radio gets you in trouble with the FCC and local authorities faster that sneaking in a freeband occasionally. Have respect for your neighbors and others on the radio will take you far. It's a great hobby man so enjoy it. However, I must stress, watch the internet for scams (yep even e-bay). Copper has the best prices I've ever found out there and customer satisfaction dates back years. Sometimes it's better to go new than "unknown used". Nope, I don't have anyhing to do with this website or company except waiting for my order to arrive. I was refered to this site by a longtime friend who has CB'd his entire life. Good luck.
